Motown Junk
Manic Street Preachers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Never ever wanted to be with you,
The only thing you gave me was the boredom I suffocated in,
Adrift in cheap towns don't stop the rain,
Numbed out in piss towns,
Just want to dig their graves

Motown, Motown junk
I laughed when Lennon got shot,
Twenty one years of living and nothing means anything to me.

Motown junk a lifetime of slavery,
Songs of love echo underclass betrayal,
Stops your heart beating for one to ten seconds,
Stops your brain thinking for one to ten seconds,

Motown junk, Motown junk
Motown junk, Motown junk

I don't want cause I just get,
All your slut heroes offer is a fear of the future,
Past made useless cause I'm dying now,
Communal tyranny, a jail that bleeds our wrists.

Motown, Motown junk
I laughed when Lennon got shot,
Twenty one years of living and nothing means anything to me.

Motown junk a lifetime of slavery,
Songs of love echo underclass betrayal,
Stops your heart beating for one to ten seconds,
Stops your brain thinking for one to ten seconds,

Motown junk, Motown junk
Motown junk, Motown junk

Motown junk a lifetime of slavery,
Songs of love echo underclass betrayal,
Stops your heart beating for one to ten seconds,
Stops your brain thinking for one to ten seconds,

Motown junk, Motown junk
Motown junk, Motown junk

We live in urban hell,
We destroy rock and roll.

Overall Meaning

In Motown Junk, the Manic Street Preachers express their disdain for the music industry and the emptiness of society. The lyrics depict a sense of isolation and disillusionment with the world around them. The first verse speaks of a failed relationship where the persona never really wanted to be with the other person, they only provided boredom that suffocated them. They find themselves numbed out in cheap towns and just want to dig their graves. The refrain "Motown, Motown Junk" appears throughout the song and is used to signify the shallowness of the music industry and how it is just junk food for the soul.

The line "I laughed when Lennon got shot" shows how desensitized the persona has become, and how much they feel disconnected from the world. This sense of detachment is emphasized in the following lines where they say "twenty-one years of living and nothing means anything to me". They see themselves as slaves to the industry and the songs of love that echo underclass betrayal. The song argues that music has lost its power to help people feel or think, as it only numbs them down for a few seconds like Motown junk food.

Finally, the bridge "Motown junk a lifetime of slavery, songs of love echo underclass betrayal, stops your heart beating for one to ten seconds, stops your brain thinking for one to ten seconds," suggests that listening to this type of music is a way of oppression, where people are conditioned to accept their situation and stop thinking for themselves. The last line "we live in urban hell, we destroy rock and roll" echoes the song's sentiment that society and music are too commercialised and shallow.

I remember finally getting a copy of the lyrics and being blown away. No lines are wasted, several of them are killer. Such a statement of intent.

'Never ever wanted to be with you, all you ever gave me was the boredom I suffocate in' is such a great opening line.
