Postcards from a Young Man
Manic Street Preachers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't believe in absolutes anymore
I'm quite prepared to admit I was wrong
This life it sucks your principles away
You have to fight against it every single day

These are the postcards from a young man
They may never be written or posted again
These are the postcards from a young man
They may never be written or posted again

It is like so many other things
As distant as your former sins
So sad and lonely and so derelict
As the optimism that we once shared

These are the postcards from a young man
They may never be written or posted again
These are the postcards from a young man
They may never be written or posted again

I'll send you postcards every single day
Just to prove I still exist
This world will not impose its will
I will not give up and I will not give in
And I will not give up and I will not give in

I won't betray your confidence
I won't pretend my way was lost

This world will not impose its will
I will not give up and I will not give in

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Manic Street Preachers' song "Postcards from a Young Man" beautifully capture the idea of growing up and leaving behind the idealism of youth. The opening verse, "I don't believe in absolutes anymore, I'm quite prepared to admit I was wrong," suggests a significant shift in the way the singer sees the world. They have grown past the need to see things in black and white and recognize that life is more complicated than that.

The second verse further explains the idea of leaving behind youth's idealism where "This life it sucks your principles away, you have to fight against it every single day." The singer is acknowledging that they are fighting against the world, trying to keep hold of their principles and ethics despite the pressures of society.

The chorus emphasizes the theme of nostalgia and longing for the past. "These are the postcards from a young man, they may never be written or posted again" speaks to a sense of loss and a desire to recapture the freedom and innocence of youth. The repetition of this line emphasizes the idea that the singer is desperate to hold onto that time in their life.

The final verse closes the song on a hopeful note as the singer promises to continue fighting against the corrupting influence of the world. "I'll send you postcards every single day, just to prove I still exist. This world will not impose its will, I will not give up and I will not give in." The singer acknowledges that it is difficult to hold onto their principles, but they will continue to do so, and will not give up or give in.

Overall, the song is a powerful exploration of growing up and how it changes our view of the world. It is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the ability to hold onto one's principles even in the face of immense pressure.

I've adored this band since I was 16 years old.  I have "This world will not impose its will, I will not give up & I will not give in" as a tattoo.  Love them, love this song. <3

Me too I have love this band since 16 or 17 years old. When I'm sad, disappointed, or even on the edge of giving up in a marathon, I could always find power humming their songs. Sheer humanism. The ending march part of this song proves all.

This band have been through so much. They are incredible songwriters and musicians it's like music means everything to them. I've seen them live over 15 times and see Jame & Nicky sometimes around Cardiff. Each time I see them live it's so euphoric. Can't wait to go again.
