She Is Suffering
Manic Street Preachers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Beauty finds refuge in herself
Lovers wrapped inside each others lies
Beauty is such a terrible thing
She is suffering yet more than death

She is suffering
She sucks you deeper in
She is suffering
You exist within her shadow

Beauty she is scarred into man's soul
A flower attracting lust, vice and sin
A vine that can strangle life from a tree
Carrion, surrounding, picking on leaves

She is suffering
She sucks you deeper in
She is suffering
You exist within her shadow

Beauty she poisons unfaithful all
Stifled, her touch is leprous and pale
The less she gives the more you need her
No thoughts to forget when we were children

She is suffering
She sucks you deeper in

She is suffering
Nature's luke-warm pleasure.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Manic Street Preachers's song "She is Suffering" is a commentary on the destructive nature of beauty and the pain that accompanies it. The song describes beauty as both a refuge and a terrible thing that lures lovers into a world of lies, lust, vice and sin. The singer observes that although beauty is suffering, it is still a powerful force that consumes those around it, and that people exist within its shadow.

The lyrics of the song suggest that beauty is a trap, and that its allure is ultimately empty and unsatisfying. The imagery of the vine that can strangle the life out of a tree or the notion of beauty as surrounded by carrion imply that beauty is a destructive and dangerous force. The lyrics suggest that beauty is both compelling and poisonous, that it can attract and repel, that it can be both desirable and deadly.

Overall, the song "She is Suffering" is a commentary on the ways in which beauty can be a double-edged sword, capable of both attracting and repelling those who seek it. It portrays beauty as a force that can be both alluring and destructive, and suggests that the pain that accompanies beauty is central to its power.

@clementine2001

'She' is desire.

@StrangeAttractor

Richey was rather partial to groupies, but maybe that was all part of the disaffection before his disappearance.. who knows. Whatever the case, The Holy Bible is one of the most enduring albums of all time.

@wozzywick

Massively underrated song song. Even people who love the rest of The Holy Bible normally criticise it, but it's stunning

@Torthrodhel

I agree, it's one of my favourites off that album.

@GreenBitterfly

Agreed, I love it, if anything Ifwhiteamerica is my least favourite on The Holy Bible not She is Suffering.

@Torthrodhel

@GreenBitterfly I like ifwhiteamerica, but there are two things very wrong with it.

First is that grammatical error. Wouldn't care normally but if you're being weird and artsy with a song title in the first place that kinda invites annoyance over grammar errors. Eh, joined titles like that are annoying to begin with, just write it properly.

But second thing is the process of actually listening to it. I understand what I'm listening to when the chorus first-version posits its racism as something "they say". But am I gonna play it at full volume? Do the neighbours or people walking by my window understand the context? Or do they just hear some random person rocking out to "there ain't no black in the Union Jack"? Owch. I mean that's what they hear isn't it? And I'm white myself so, um... best not.

@GreenBitterfly

@Jane Ross Sorry I never got a notification of your reply. Yes, the way it's written annoys me, I can never write it right, it's down as Ifwhiteamerican on my The Holy Bible album on my tablet and I refuse to change it! Yes, I'm not sure it sounds right if you don't get the context!

@corinnae.7877

@GreenBitterfly I just dislike the musical composition. With the album in particular, those instrumentals make a song a hit or a miss. I find it rather challenging to get into this album because, maybe I'm overreacting, I felt like I was listening to a pop punk song. Pop punk is one of the genres I absolutely despite for context. While I adore the lyrics, the lyrics feel like poems, im a sucker for that.
