Tsunami
Manic Street Preachers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

For you my dear sister
Holding onto me forever
Disco dancing with the rapists
Your only crime is silence

Can't work at this anymore
Can't move, I want to stay at home
Tied up to all these crutches
Never far from your hands

Tsunami tsunami came washing over me
Tsunami tsunami came washing over me
Can't speak, can't think, won't talk, won't walk

Doctors tell me that I'm cynical
I tell them that it must be chemical
So what am I doing girl
Cry into my drink I disappear

Eyes for teeth waving over me
Bring down the shadows of my mind
Sleep and breathe under our sheets
Inhale the anxiety in between, in between, in between, in between

Tsunami tsunami came washing over me
Tsunami tsunami came washing over me
Tsunami tsunami came washing over me
Tsunami tsunami came washing over me
Through September under the weather

In between, in between, in between, in between

Tsunami tsunami came washing over me
Tsunami tsunami came washing over me
Tsunami tsunami came washing over me

Tsunami tsunami came washing over me
Take the GI's I will have the spies

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Tsunami" by the Manic Street Preachers speak to themes of trauma, fear, and the struggle to cope with the aftermath of a devastating event. The first few lines are particularly striking, as they seem to reference sexual assault and victim blaming: "Disco dancing with the rapists / Your only crime is silence." Here, the singer seems to be addressing a woman who has experienced sexual violence and is being blamed for not speaking up about it. The "disco dancing" could represent the idea of trying to go on with life as normal, despite the trauma she has experienced.

The rest of the lyrics shift their focus to the singer's own struggles with mental illness, possibly as a result of trauma. He talks about feeling tied down by "crutches" and unable to leave his home. The repetition of "Tsunami tsunami came washing over me" seems to represent the overwhelming force of his emotions and the feeling of being out of control. The line "Take the GI's I will have the spies" may be a reference to the idea of feeling constantly watched and surveilled.

Overall, the song seems to be a powerful commentary on the lasting effects of traumatic events and the difficulty of moving on from them. The images of water washing over the singer and the reference to a "tsunami" create a strong sense of overwhelm, while the lyrics about feeling helpless and trapped convey a sense of how trauma can affect a person's life in many different ways.

21 years ago, the guy I bought my first car from gave me this album. I could remember that mystical song's name, but couldn't remember the band's name. Today I did :)

Used to start my workday in the pub, blasting this album on the speakers. Still great memories, and one of the best albums of that era. Ten times better than the shite they produce nowadays. I feel sad for my daughter

The last time I heard this was IN 1998! My brother used to play it in his car all the time. I hadn’t heard it since and forgot it and then by chance it was on Absolute 90s the other day! Talk about lost treasures!!
