He received his initial training under his legendary uncle Krishna Dey. Later he migrated to Mumbai to gain foothold in Hindi cinema.
Mention of this great singer immediately brings into mind such unforgettable classical-based melodies as Bhai bhanjana, Sur na saje, Pucho na keise maine, Chham Chham baje re payaliya. In fact, whenever composers used to have a great classical composition in their minds, they would invariably take Manna Dey.
Interestingly, in spite of his solid classical background, he was equally at ease in all types of songs, be it Romantic - Yeh raat bheegi bheegi, Jaha bhi jaati hoon wohi chali aati ho, Dil ki girah khol do, Saanjh dhali; peppy - Aao twist karen; folksy - Chalata musafir moh liya re, door hain kinara; sad - Kasme Wade pyar wafa sab, Tum bin jeevan keisa jeevan; funny - Khali dabba khali botol, mere bhais ko danda; quali - Ai mere johra jevin, Yaari hain imaan mera; spiritual- Laaga chuneri mein daag; or philosophical - Zindegi keisi hain paheli, Tum besahara ho to; ghazal - Neino se yon baat kare.
One unique contribution is his famous rendition in music of the equally famous Madhushala written by Dr. Haribans Rai Bachchan the father of equally illustrious Amitabh Bachchan.
He is a composer in his own right, composing mostly in Bengali innumerable hit songs.

Real great Review

Aur roz mulaaqaate hai
Pyaar hai us ke liye
Aur ham se faqat baate hai
Are hato kaahe ko
Jhuti banaao batiyaan
Hato kaahe ko jhuti banaao
Banaao banaao batiyaan
Jaao jaao jaao
Jhuthi baat na banaao
Jal rahi virah me
Saiyaa aur na jalaao
Hato kaahe ko jhuti
Ye udi udi si rangat
Ye khule khule se gesu
Teri subah kah rahi hai
Teri raat kaa fasaanaa
Teri raat kaa fasaanaa
Dekho ji kisi kaa pyaar
Ham se na chhupaao
Dekho ji kisi kaa pyaar
Ham se na chhupaao
Sab hame pataa hai
Pyaare nain na jhukaao
Nain na jhukaao
Suno kahati hai
Kyaa kyaa
Kahati hai tumhari akhiyaan
Hato kaahe ko jhuti banaao
Banaao banaao batiyaan
Hato kaahe ko
Jhuti banaao batiyaan
Hato kaahe ko jhuti
Banaao batiyaan
Kaahe ko jhuti
Banaao batiyaan
Hato kaahe ko jhuti
Banaao batiyaan
Hato kaahe ko jhuti
Banaa haa
He
Banaao batiyaan
Kaahe ko jhuti
Banaao batiyaan
Jhuti batiyaan kaahe ko
Banaao
Jhuti batiyaan kaahe ko
Banaao
Jhuti batiyaan kaahe ko
Banaao
He he banaao
Ho ho banaao
Lay jara utha ke bhaiya
Aey banaao batiyaan
Jhuti ti ti ti ti
Abe bandh kar be.
The song "Hato Kahe Ko Jhuthi" by Manna Dey contemplates a lover's deceitful ways as they frequently meet with someone else while sharing false tales of their love for the singer. The opening verse acknowledges this fact, as the singer notes that his lover spends more time with their secret partner than with him, and the only interaction he has with them is through words. The chorus then repeats the plea for the lover to stop telling lies, asking why they need to continue doing so.
The following verse describes the physical appearance of the lover, seemingly demonstrating to the third person that their existence is no secret. The singer urges them to stop hiding this love away and to look him in the eye. Finally, the song ends on an urgent note, growling a final plea for the lover to cast aside falsehoods as their love burns in separation.
Overall, the lyrics in "Hato Kahe Ko Jhuthi" express a desire for honesty and the pain of betrayal. While the exact details of the singer's relationship are not entirely clear, they appear to be writhing in agony as they watch their lover spin lies and secrets around them.

Great rendering of classical raga. In film, every time Mahmud (a panwala from Jaunpur) wants to sing, he will lower harmonium from shop attic. He will fail to sing since customers will run away. Finally he succeed. Thanks for video that displays actors talent that finally flowered in Padosan.

A few classical immortal bandishes have been successfully adopted by equally gifted music directors & singers like Baat chalaat nayi chunari in Rani Roommati by Pt S.N.Tripathi& sung by Mohd Rafi in company of classical singer Krishnarao Chonkar , Ka karu Sajani aye na balam by Yesudas in Swami and this one.
When it came to singing filmi songs of classical type the music directors had to turn to only Manna Da & Rafi Saab.
