Traditions Of Christmas
Mannheim Steamroller Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Holy and the Ivy, Mistletoe and kisses,
Grandma telling stories on this Holy Night.
Cookies in the oven
Baked with warmth and loving',
Feelings warm and tender,
Singing "Silent Night"

When traditions are so special
They make your heart so warm dear,
They give you soft, kind feelings
That make you realize
That the world needs our affection
To keep the season's blessings.
Christmas has a spirit
That keeps you so alive.

Candlelight in churches,
Starlight on the mountains.
Smell of pine in houses,
Wood smoke in the air.
Teddies warm and cuddly,
Firelight on the mantle,
These are things that make it
So traditional

When traditions are so special
They make your heart so warm dear,
They give you soft, kind feelings
That make you realize
That the world needs our affection
To keep the season's blessings.

Christmas has a spirit
That keeps you so alive.

Overall Meaning

The Mannheim Steamroller's song Traditions of Christmas is a beautiful ode to the warmth and love that is often associated with the holiday season. The song begins with the reference to the Holy and the Ivy, Mistletoe and kisses, and Grandma telling stories on this Holy Night. The singer goes on to describe the feeling of warmth and tenderness that is evoked by the smell of cookies in the oven, baked with love and affection. The lyrics then transition to the idea that Christmas traditions are what make the season special and important, and it is up to us to keep those traditions alive and to spread the love and joy they bring.

Throughout the rest of the song, the lyrics mention various elements of the traditional Christmas experience, such as candlelight in churches, starlight on the mountains, the smell of pine in houses, and wood smoke in the air. The image of cuddly teddies and firelight on the mantle adds to the cozy feeling of the season. The main message of the song is that there is a spirit to Christmas, and that it is up to us to perpetuate that spirit by cherishing and celebrating our traditions.

My wedding anniversary is Christmas Eve. I used this song as my wedding march when my husband and I were married at our home in 2000. I lost him in 2014. He still owns my heart, and I sit and listen to this and weep, but I am so very grateful to God for the years we had together.

Why is it that such a beautiful song like this makes you bring back memories of departed loved ones ? Beautiful song, I could listen to it for hours.

It certainly does :)

I put this on a loop so I could set the tone of my first novel! The music fit so perfectly with the time period my story was set in…1889. My book was published!

This song has been one of my most favorite Christmas songs from the moment I heard it in 1992. Thank you so very much for sharing this here, and a very Merry Christmas to you!!

I love this song, it's so beautiful. Strangely, it also makes me somewhat sad, as it reminds me of Christmases long ago and my parents who are gone now . . .

God, is this album really that old now?
My mom bought both of these first two Christmas albums when I was a kid and I will never go a Christmas season without thinking of them.

I pretty much grew up listening to Mannheim Steamroller's Christmas music every year at Christmas time. My mom and her sisters would also play it when we got together at Christmas time. And this is such a beautiful song. It's 1 of my many favorite Christmas songs by them.
