Animals
Manny Elias Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I know what I need I need you
I can't see nothin' else all I can see is you
I don't care what they say about my state of mind
I know what's good for me and you are just my kind
We are animals
We are animals
We are animals
We are animals
I know what I want I want you
Shed your cloths forget your codes
You know this is nothing new

I smell your scent I taste your sweat
I feel this passion too
Let's trust our senses not our minds
Lets break all the rules
We are animals
We are animals
We are animals
We are animals
We are animals
We are animals

Come with me run with me leave this world behind
Come to me come with me I know that we will find
We are animals
We are animals
We are animals
We are animals

We are animals
We are animals

Overall Meaning

The song "Animals" by Manny Elias is a passionate expression of desire and liberation. The lyrics speak of a deep yearning for a specific person, and a willingness to cast aside societal norms and embrace one's primal instincts. The repetition of the phrase "We are animals" reinforces the idea that human beings are fundamentally driven by basic, animalistic impulses, and that these desires should not be suppressed but rather celebrated.

The opening lines, "I know what I need / I need you / I can't see nothin' else all I can see is you," set the tone for the rest of the song. The singer is singularly focused on the object of their desire, and is willing to disregard anything else in order to pursue that person. The lines "Shed your cloths forget your codes / You know this is nothing new" suggest a rejection of societal norms around modesty and sexual expression. The chorus, "We are animals," further emphasizes this idea, suggesting that humans should not be ashamed of their natural desires.

The final lines, "Come with me run with me leave this world behind / Come to me come with me I know that we will find," convey a sense of urgency and excitement. The singer is passionate about their desire for this person, and is eager to escape from the constraints of the outside world and give in to their animalistic instincts.

@RougeCurry Definitely. Anybody who’s actually read into the hundreds of documented war crimes that were never brought to light during the war will know. Tiger Force, Operation Speedy Express, Winter Soldier Investigation, etc etc.

Every single infantry division and independent brigade in Vietnam had blood on their hands when it came to atrocities. Most soldiers didn’t do these things, that’s correct, but virtually every major unit had dudes who’d gone off the rails.

That’s besides the whole insanity of the air war, where helicopters would often mow down people in free fire zones (regardless if they were armed or not) and the horrendous amount of napalm that was indiscriminately dropped on villages in the country. Or the bombings on Cambodia, Laos, and the North.

Even if most grunts didn’t commit atrocities, a good chunk of them have probably just witnessed them. Whether it’s their own guys shooting, beating, or molesting someone, or seeing dead civilians burned by napalm in a village they passed by.

Or by the NVA and VC themselves, who did unspeakable things like burn people alive with flamethrowers and behead infant children. Just horrible all around, the only good guys were the innocent people.

I read Oliver Stone’s biography. Half of the stuff in this scene is based on real things he experienced when he served in Vietnam as a combat infantryman.
Taylor shooting at the kids feet was based on when Oliver once lost his temper and shot at an old man’s feet.
Bunny clubbing the kid to death was based on an incident in Oliver’s unit when one of the younger guys came up to the group and started bragging about how he clubbed an old woman to death then burned the hootch down to cover the evidence.
Taylor saving the girls from rape was also true. In a village there were in, Oliver came across a group of soldiers harassing 2 Vietnamese teen girls. The harassment turned into a rape and Oliver stepped in and broke it up and escorted the girls to safety.
Barnes throwing the white phosphorus grenade in the bunker was a real thing that happened often. While filming that shot Oliver got emotional and had to walk of set.

Talked to my grandpa (who was a Vietnam Army combat vet) the other day. He said this was the most realistic war movie to him by far. He said that the only thing that would make it spot on is if they cranked up the heat in the theatre to 120 degrees and put in the smell of dead bodies.
