Manowar Lyrics

Thank You For The Kool Aid Reverend Jim
We're Glad To Leave Behind Their World Of Sin
Our Lifeless Bodies Fall On Holy Ground
Rotting Flesh A Sacrificial Mound
Were You Our God Or A Man In A Play Who Took Our
Applause And Forced Us To Stay
Now All Together We Lived As We Died On Your Command
By Your Side
Guyana In The Cult Of The Damned
Give Us Your Word For The Grand Final Stand
Guyana In The Cult Of The Damned
Give Us Your Word For The Grand Final Stand

In The Cult Of The Damned We All Worked The Land, Too Afraid
To Look Up
We All Feared His Hand
Hurry My Children
There Isn't Much Time
But We'll Meet Again On The Other Side
Be Good To The Children And Old People
First Hand Them A Drink
They're Dying Of Thirst

Guyana In The Cult Of The Damned
Give Us Your Word For The Grand Final Stand
Guyana In The Cult Of The Damned
Give Us Your Word For The Grand Final Stand
Guyana In The Cult Of The Damned
Give Us Your Word For The Grand Final Stand
Guyana In The Cult Of The Damned
Give Us Your Word For The Grand Final Stand

Bigfoot, Bigfoot Thrown In A Well
Pulled Under Water
Screaming Like Hell
He Told Us Life Was Just A Hotel
Time To Check Out When He Rang The Bell

Guyana In The Cult Of The Damned
Give Us Your Word For The Grand Final Stand

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Manowar's "Guyana" are a haunting reflection of the tragic events that occurred in Jonestown, Guyana in 1978. Reverend Jim Jones, the cult leader of the People's Temple, had convinced over 900 of his followers to move to the remote settlement in Guyana, where he planned to create a utopian society. However, as the conditions in Jonestown grew increasingly unbearable, Jones became increasingly paranoid and controlling. His followers were forced to work long hours, endure harsh living conditions, and were subjected to physical and emotional abuse. In the song, Manowar paints a vivid picture of the horrors that occurred in Jonestown, as well as the psychological manipulation and brainwashing tactics employed by Jim Jones.

The opening lines, "Thank you for the Kool Aid Reverend Jim, we're glad to leave behind their world of sin," are a direct reference to the mass suicide that occurred in Jonestown, where Jones urged his followers to drink a poisoned Kool-Aid mixture. The line "our lifeless bodies fall on holy ground, rotting flesh a sacrificial mound" paints a picture of the aftermath of the mass suicide, where hundreds of bodies were left to decay in the Guyanese jungle. The lyrics "were you our God or a man in a play, who took our applause and forced us to stay" are a reflection of the tyrannical power that Jim Jones held over his followers, who were kept in Jonestown against their will.

The chorus, "Guyana in the cult of the damned, give us your word for the grand final stand," is a chilling reminder of the ultimate fate of the People's Temple members. The final lines of the song, "Bigfoot, bigfoot thrown in a well, pulled under water screaming like hell, he told us life was just a hotel, time to check out when he rang the bell," are a reference to the murder of Congressman Leo Ryan, who had come to Jonestown to investigate allegations of abuse and mistreatment of People's Temple members. Ryan and his accompanying delegation were ambushed at the Port Kaituma airstrip on their way out of Jonestown, resulting in the deaths of Ryan and several other people.

I never knew this song existed before today. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the title. I looked at it a second time to make sure I was reading correctly. Without further ado, let me claim this song for all Guyana 'cause I'm Guyanese . I am not proud of the horrid Jonestown Massacre by its very nature but to know such a tragedy of epic proportion happened in a day on Guyana's soil and claiming 918 lives from apparent cyanide poisoning gives you the chills! So grand was this to date that it had to be very well documented in the various forms of the arts such as the movies and this song is no exception by an important Heavy Metal band. Guyana, a virtually unknown country was then placed in the spotlight. Now in 2019, once again Guyana is being talked about. This time as the last frontier for its vast crude oil reserves! I've read the comments below and saw I am arguably the first Guyanese to have listened to this song here. I am a great fan of Manowar.

Edit: Four years ago I made this comment, today 17 th November, 2023 I am here again to express another imminent 'disaster' about to happen in Guyana. Our western neighbour - Venezuela has threatened to annex 2/3 of the country via a referendum coming up on December 3rd, 2023!
Strikingly, it's the county of Essequibo exactly where the Jonestown Massacre occured! Is Guyana and in particular the Essequibo county cursed?

I thought it was grape flavored Flavor-ade? Whatever the case it’s a very scary story and I hope the self proclaimed Reverend Jim is still paying his dues in hell! Nice to meet you brother and Hail from upstate ny!

😀👍👍

@Red21Viper

No prob with Manowar getting more famous to new kids with songs like Warriors of the World but songs like Guyana are criminally underrated. Folks do yourself a favour and listen to the best music ever made. Guyana, Mountains, Secret of Steel, Bridge of Death, March for Revenge and so on

@piercaramel3103

Best Manowar album... Guyana is a Masterpiece
