Cancer
Mansun Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My book of Mormon
Wrapped in Turin
And it seems inferior and jittery
You preach elastic
To your jagged flock
In an eerie passion for self-flattery

I'm emotionally raped by Jesus
I'm emotionally raped by Jesus now
But I'm still here
Yes, somehow I'm still here

What now of my faith
Just a desperate exercise to limit pain
I am weak
I'm emotional and sensitive and frail
In need of some love
Pull the cancer from the Vatican's own state
Uninformed
You will harbour those who nurtured Europe's War
Keep turning my cheek
In a fragile state of violence left me weak
No guilt
Hold your people in disdain and steal their grace

I need replacement
To feel redefined
And it's just this matter of identity
You preach elastic
To your jagged flock
It's an eerie passion for self-flattery

Emotionally I'm wrapped in shame
Emotionally I feel I'm raped
Oh, emotionally in chains

What now of my faith
It's a desperate exercise to limit pain
No guilt
Hold your people in disdain and steal their grace
Keep turning my cheek
I'm emotional and sensitive and weak
Uninformed
You have harboured those who nurtured Europe's War

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Cancer" by Mansun depict a crisis of faith and the inner turmoil of the singer. The opening lines, "My book of Mormon, Wrapped in Turin," evoke religion and its holy texts, which the singer is surrounded by. Yet, the lines also imply a sense of confusion and insecurity as the sacred texts are "inferior and jittery."

The song continues with the singer's internal struggle with faith and the emotional pain caused by religious ideals. The lines, "I'm emotionally raped by Jesus, I'm emotionally raped by Jesus now, But I'm still here," convey a sense of violation and abuse by the very entity the singer believes in. The singer feels trapped and emotionally chained, needing a replacement to feel redefined.

The song suggests that religious institutions are responsible for the war and destruction in Europe. The lines, "Uninformed, You will harbor those who nurtured Europe's War," indicate the singer's belief that religion is a cause of conflict and cruelty.

Overall, "Cancer" is a profound and introspective song about faith, self-identity, and pain caused by religious institutions.

@leonmorgan5659

possibly the greatest album of the entire fucking 90s

@coordinacion-flashesandsou3736

One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, no doubt about it. It brings so many memories as well. Ah, the 90s, how I miss them.

@SiLatics56

Should go down as one of the best albums of the 90s. Up there with OK Computer. Better than the likes of Oasis by absolute miles. Sounded like the 2nd coming of prog. The musical interlude here is truly magical.

@yourgameisstupid

Why would you even compare this to Oasis? Completely different artists doing completely different things, completely asinine comparison.

@SiLatics56

@@yourgameisstupid Because Oasis were held in such high regard but were light years behind Mansun in terms of talent. It is still sort of in the same category though. Mansun had a bit of the Brit Pop thing about them, but they adapted it into something more.

@yourgameisstupid

@@SiLatics56 Still incoherent. Mansun could have never written songs like Don't Look Back in Anger or Champagne Supernova; and Oasis could never have written songs like Serotonin or Cancer. Totally different types of talent, saying one is more talented than the other is inherently nonsensical.
