Originally released as a single (Four EP) in November 1996.

The band (more likely the label) took a lot of care in milking their most famous hit.
A live performance (dubbed 'Live Open Space) appears as a b-side to She Makes My Nose Bleed in February 1997. An acoustic performance appears as a b-side to Taxloss in May 1997.

Several club remixes were commissioned. The most popular of which by Paul Oakenfold and Steve Osborne using their Perfecto alias went on to become a major club hit. In 2010 Paul Draper collaborated with Greg Downey on a new mix of Wide Open Space (basically an update of the Perfecto Mix).

Overall Meaning

I went to see Mansun at Reading 1999. Sunday night. They were playing in one of the small tents, and I didn't care who was on the main stage. Mansun were every bit of the best band you could imagine seeing live. I can hardly believe it was nearly 20 years ago.

Brilliant song. Attack of the Grey Lantern is one of my favourite albums, and I still play it often. I saw Mansun live supporting Suede in early ‘97 and have been a fan ever since.

I'm 14 years old, my dad played me 'six' in the car near the beginning of this year, when the 21st anniversary edition was released. I absolutely loved their music and immediately fell in love with the album, it was what I was missing my whole life. Later on I listened to 'Attack of the Grey Lantern' and I loved that too. I just wish more people knew about this perfect band and I've been trying my best to get as many people as I can to start listening to their music, Mansun was truely an amazing band.

The first time I heard this song, I was 14 as well. It was from a mixtape that my sister had. I did not know who the band was but I remember how captivating the song was. Then I completely forgot about it. Over the years it would pop up in my mind again. Today I'm 29 years old, and it popped up in my head again and bothered to type in the search bar a piece of lyrics I remembered from the song and found it. It still has that effect on me. Bizarrely I missed the band in the 90s, when I was going to rock/metal/industrial clubs, and only hearing this in the early 2000s led to me falling in love and digging up the back catalogue. The lyrical style reminded me of The Smiths, but in a somehow more fun way, more sensitive way. This song always takes me back to a time when I felt a lot more alone in a room full of people, and yet having a good song articulate your loneliness makes you feel a lot less alone in the world, like you're not the only person stuck in that headspace. Even 20 years on, when I'm miles away from that headspace, it still resonates as a great song, powerfully emotive, and just a little bit daft towards the end.

I listened to very heavy music at this time. Like Marilyn Manson. A huge variety but this song always hit me the hardest. It's one of the most beautiful haunting songs I've ever heard. If there's anybody who cares when I die I hope they play this at my funeral if I have one. I don't even know if I'll know anybody when I die. What is strange comment to make. But it just fits

600 thousand plus views is criminal for such an amazing band as Mansun. I stopped listening to Oasis and Blur because of Mansun who were 100 times better. I can't understand why the rest of Britain didn't catch on to them even though they sold over one million albums in regards to the first album AOTGL

This was one of the best songs of the 90's.

But it failed eternally, in registry of format for value, due to the lyric:

'You'll never get to Heaven with a smile on your face for me'.

We want hope and salvation... Not just awesome rock.
