Mansun Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
In "I Care" by Mansun, the lead singer is describing a dark and secretive inner world. The hanging of glass and mirrors on his walls suggest a heightened sense of self-awareness and vanity. He feels surrounded by pressure and paranoia, and is controlling his impulses by denying his desires. His secrets bring him a sense of satisfaction and excitement, but also fear and guilt. He describes wanting to be used sexually, like a porn star, but knows that he can't go through with it, at least not physically.
The line "no contact of flesh and no tongues and no touching" suggests that the singer may be engaging in some kind of virtual or voyeuristic sexual activity. He desires the thrill that comes with engaging in dangerous behavior, but is held back by fear and hesitation. The mirrors on his walls give him a sense of grandeur and importance, as if he is creating a larger-than-life persona for himself, while also serving as a kind of protective barrier that keeps him from fully realizing his desires.
Overall, "I Care" is a powerful and introspective song that explores the complex nature of desire, guilt, and secrecy. The singer's internal struggles and hidden desires are brought to life through the lyrics, creating a haunting and memorable musical experience.
Line by Line Meaning
I hang glass from the wall, it makes my life seem big
Mirrors hang from my wall, to make my world seem big
You forced me to do things I wasn't aware of
And this is our secret and everyone does this
My future is written in closed circuit evidence
Me and my self-denial will keep you from justice and free
I wriggle and squirm as you try to convince me
And everyone stares, they know what I've been up to
The pressure engulfing me, memories orbiting me
Fits epiletic in waves leaping over me
No contact of flesh and no tongues and no touching
No fear of disease and I can't take my clothes off
I want to get fucked like a whore in a porno, it's me
Don't tell anybody, it's our dirty secret, it's me
I will protect you and shield you, prevent you from danger
You've intruded and taken away all my sweetness
But somehow these mirrors they make my existence seem bigger
Somehow these mirrors they make my existence seem bigger

Yes, it's got that 80s retro feel and sound to it, I'd love to see Daft Punk do a remix of this as it would be interesting to see what they could come up with. Hide Under the Bed has that same emotional nostalgic feeling for me when I play it. It's a mix of those electronic distorted key sounds mixed with base, guitar and drums which means the sound feel like it's stretching out into the night sky a very atmospheric sound. I get that with a lot of the 80s songs like the Killing Moon single by Echo and the Bunny men and the Lost Boys soundtrack.

This is a fantastic track from a fantastic band

Do you like that retro 80s feel to the song as this is why I loved Mansun as they kept that sound from the 80s electronic acts and mixed it with the heavy rock sound of the 90s.

How this didn't make the six-album is beyond me. The song sounds so sonic, so electric and so futuristic with the sound from the '80s if that makes sense.
@dfstarborn
Electronic, sonic genius, my fav Mansun song!
