The First Noel
Mantovani Lyrics

The First Noel, the Angels did say
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay
In fields where they lay keeping their sheep
On a cold winter's night that was so deep.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!

They looked up and saw a star
Shining in the East beyond them far
And to the earth it gave great light
And so it continued both day and night.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!

And by the light of that same star
Three Wise men came from country far
To seek for a King was their intent
And to follow the star wherever it went.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!

This star drew nigh to the northwest
O'er Bethlehem it took its rest
And there it did both Pause and stay
Right o'er the place where Jesus lay.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!

Then entered in those Wise men three
Full reverently upon their knee
And offered there in His presence
Their gold and myrrh and frankincense.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!

Then let us all with one accord
Sing praises to our heavenly Lord
That hath made Heaven and earth of nought
And with his blood mankind has bought.

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!

Overall Meaning

The First Noel is a Christmas carol that tells the story of the birth of Jesus Christ from the perspective of the shepherds and the wise men. The opening verse begins with conveying how the angels appeared before the shepherds in the fields and announced the birth of Jesus, the savior of Israel. The word Noel is used as a refrain that is woven into each verse of the song. It is a French word that means "Christmas," and it is believed that the word was used to give the song a sense of celebration and festivity.

The lyrics then describe how the shepherds looked up and saw a bright star shining in the East, leading them to the birthplace of Jesus Christ. The bright light given off by the star is symbolic of the divine presence of Jesus, the light of the world. The next verse mentions the arrival of the wise men who traveled a great distance to find the newborn king. They had seen the star and were intent on finding the king it pointed to. The final verse calls upon everyone to joyfully praise the Lord for creating heaven and earth and sacrificing Himself to give life to mankind.

Overall, The First Noel is a beautiful and moving song that reminds us of the true meaning of Christmas.
