Manu Dibango (Emmanuel N'Djoké Dibango, December 12, 1933 in Douala, Camero… Read Full Bio ↴Manu Dibango (Emmanuel N'Djoké Dibango, December 12, 1933 in Douala, Cameroon-March 24, 2020 in Paris, France) was a Cameroonian saxophonist and vibraphone player. Leaving Cameroon to France to study, he got to study music where he enrolled for piano lessons. Though a piano student, Manu fell in love with his friend and classmate's instrument, the saxophone. Not having a keyboard at home to rehearse his music lessons, he spent time using his friend's saxophone which has today become his longest companion. He developed a musical style fusing jazz and traditional Cameroonian music. He is a member of the Yabassi ethnic group, though his mother was a Douala.

He has collaborated with many musicians, including Fela Kuti, Herbie Hancock, Bill Laswell, Bernie Worrell, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, and Sly and Robbie. In 1998 he recored the album CubAfrica with Cuban artist Eliades Ochoa .

His Soul Makossa is often considered the first disco record (Jones and Kantonen, 1999). Prominent and loved by his country, he just celebrated his 50th musical anniversary in Cameroon, where he was greatly supported by the wife of the president of Cameroon.

Manu Dibango was the sole African who exposed African traditional music to the western world. His style took the world by storm when the American superstar, Michael Jackson took Manu's Soul Makossa which featured in Jackson's album in You wanna be startin' Something.[i/] This same hit today vibrates the music chart which featuresAkon. Obviously, Jackson lost the suit and had to pay the African Saxophonist for Damage.

Just listening to this after reading that Manu Dibango passed away. I remember listening to his music on the radio when i was a nineteen year old student in Delhi in 1975, the year after the Soul Makossa album came out. I had never heard African music before and was fascinated by the powerful rhythms and exciting tone. Now I'm nearly sixty four. The music literally whizzes me on a roller-coaster ride back down the tunnel of my life all the way to the hot, burnt, primitive Delhi of the mid seventies when the music of Africa seemed much closer to real life there than the Beatles.

My youth was rocked at the one side by rythms from musicians like Manu Dibango, Fela, King Sunny Ade, Stevie Wonder... etc and at the other side by (old) Indian movies and songs (Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Manoj Kumar (Dus Numbri...)..All those artistic memories came to the surface with emotions when I read the news of Manu's passing away. My father was a student in Senegal in the mid-seventies, and he told me he had a chance to briefly chat with Manu Dibango after a show he performed in Dakar. He described Manu as one giant of a man, but a very cool a nice guy to everyone.

That's when I realized how much of an icon Manu Dibango was to the African youth then.

I once made the gap in money I owed in rent by selling this album. I found it in a dusty Jamaican junk store in Queens. Soul Makossa was being played regularly at underground parties in Manhattan and everyone was digging crates looking for it. I had bought it for $2 and sold it for $40 a month or so later. Wish that I didn't have to part with it, but it always bring back the bitter sweet memories of those days.

I still have this album (vinyl) after all these years. I discovered Manu early in my formative years as an aspiring young tenor sax player. I lived by the seaside back then and filled the room with incense whilst listening to this. The incense and the summery sea breeze at night created a magical atmosphere. Nowadays I live far from the sea... the memories and the feeling remain. RIP Manu, thank you for the good vibes.

I was a kid when the song Soul Makossa came out. It was like something from another world and ethnic and exotic and rhythmic like nothing I'd heard before. That song and Desmond Dekker's "The Israelites" are both amazing songs. I have never heard this album before and it's all great. Youtube is a blessing for sharing outstanding music.

A French Canadian pal brought this album back from Montreal the month it was released. Looked at the cover and thought this wasn’t much. Put it on the turntable and decided it was even better than Michel suggested. Read the liner notes and realised it was even more than just a band. The group was an international treasure.

Other Afrobeat artists are also a must, just some random recommendations : Lijadu Sisters - Bayi L'ense; Ikebe Shakedown - Dram; Ebo Taylor - Aboa Kyirbin; The Funkees - Break Through. Anyways stay groovy my friend :)

This album is almost as old as I am, yet this is the first time I've heard it in full! A masterpiece, so good the title track is not required.. in fact it seems apart from the rest!
So influential, it's a sampler's paradise and also other music genres took from this.

R.I.P. Legend, a life that left its mark for sure.

This was always one of my favorite albums -- it, and he, had everything I needed for dancing around the house. Like a previous commenter, I sold this album to pay for essentials. It went to a good home. I hadn't heard about his death... his music lives on.
