Theme From 'Honeymoon'
Manuel & The Music Of The Mountains Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Round like a circle in a spiral, like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending or beginning on an ever spinning reel
Like a snowball down a mountain, or a carnival balloon
Like a carousel that's turning running rings around the moon
Like a clock whose hands are sweeping past the minutes of its face
And the world is like an apple whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find in the windmills of your mind!
Like a tunnel that you follow to a tunnel of its own
Down a hollow to a cavern where the sun has never shone
Like a door that keeps revolving in a half forgotten dream
Or the ripples from a pebble someone tosses in a stream
Like a clock whose hands are sweeping past the minutes of its face
And the world is like an apple whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find in the windmills of your mind!

Keys that jingle in your pocket, words that jangle in your head
Why did summer go so quickly, was it something that you said?
Lovers walking along a shore and leave their footprints in the sand
Is the sound of distant drumming just the fingers of your hand?
Pictures hanging in a hallway and the fragment of a song
Half remembered names and faces, but to whom do they belong?
When you knew that it was over you were suddenly aware
That the autumn leaves were turning to the color of her hair!
Like a circle in a spiral, like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending or beginning on an ever spinning reel

As the images unwind, like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind!

Overall Meaning

The "Theme From 'Honeymoon'" by Manuel & The Music Of The Mountains is a song that is hard to define as it tackles the complexity of the human mind and the way we process our memories and thoughts. Instrumentally, the song's usage of flute, acoustic guitar, and strings take us on a whimsical journey that meshes perfectly with the lyrics. The first verse talks about the ever-turning circle of life, reflecting on the cyclical nature of things. It compares the way we move through life to a snowball down a mountain and a carousel that is turning, ultimately leading to the idea that we are like the "circles that you find in the windmills of your mind."

The second verse brings the concept of memory to the forefront in a surreal way. The tunnel that keeps going, the door that revolves, and the ripples in the stream all illustrate the way we hold onto our own memories. The line, "the world is like an apple whirling silently in space," gives the listener a sense of how small and insignificant we are in a larger context. The imagery of pictures hanging in a hallway, half-remembered names and faces, and autumn leaves turning to the color of her hair, allude to the way we process our memories through physical objects and emotions. The song ultimately ends with the repetition of the chorus, emphasizing that life itself is a never-ending cycle that loops perpetually, just like the "circles that you find in the windmills of your mind."

This music was composed by Mikis Theodorakis for " la luna de miel" (honeymoon), a Michael Powell's film ( 1959 )

The Beatles used to play this song on stage since 1962, based on this version. But, since was purely instumental, and the only pre-1961 vocal was singed by Petula Clark in French, one must presume that Paul McCartney studied the sheet music in order to made a translation. Beatles likely covered this vocal version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JS_awZY0b6M

@chkjns Thanks Chuck - it's always good to hear from you. I agree, having now listened to them both back to back, that the 1971 version, with better recording technology, has the better sound over this 1959 one.
