Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Maps's song "Don't Fear" are repetitive and simplistic, yet also carry a deeper meaning. The repeated phrase "Don't fear the sun, feel like someone" could be interpreted as an encouragement to not be intimidated by life's challenges or obstacles, but rather to embrace them and approach them with confidence and a sense of purpose. The repetition of this phrase underscores its importance and elevates it beyond just a catchy chorus.

At the same time, the use of the phrases "somehow, somehow, come on" indicates a sense of urgency or desperation behind the message. The singer is not just offering a suggestion or piece of advice, but rather pleading with the listener to adopt this attitude and approach to life. The use of repetition also reinforces the idea that this is not something to be considered lightly - it is a message that needs to be repeated and internalized.

Overall, "Don't Fear" is an uplifting song with a message of encouragement and positivity. It urges the listener to face life's challenges head-on and not be afraid to be themselves and pursue their goals.

This is one of my all-time favorite songs. I remember where i was when it was released on Halloween of '06, smoking on the sidewalk outside a bistro on Capital Hill, Seattle. I watched a group of people on a balcony drop a foot-wide spider prop connected to a string onto the solo passerby eight stories below. When that spider landed on hi head he jumped 5 feet in the air and screamed at a pitch that I've never heard since! They all laughed their asses off ass and went on with their Halloween plans, good old neighborhood fun! It was hilarious to witness really,in such a big metropolis. What a great night back in the day. This song always brings me back!
