Jesus Mighty God
Maranatha! Praise Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The splendor of a King, clothed in majesty
Let all the earth rejoice
All the earth rejoice

He wraps himself in Light, and darkness tries to hide
And trembles at His voice
Trembles at His voice
How great is our God, sing with me
How great is our God, and all will see
How great, how great is our God

Age to age He stands
And time is in His hands
Beginning and the end
Beginning and the end

The Godhead Three in One
Father Spirit Son
The Lion and the Lamb
The Lion and the Lamb

Name above all names
Worthy of our praise
My heart will sing
How great is our God

How great is our God, sing with me

How great is our God, and all will see
How great, how great is our God

Overall Meaning

The Maranatha Praise Band's song "How Great is Our God" is a triumphant declaration of God's power and majesty. The first verse describes God as a king, clothed in splendor and majesty. The whole earth is invited to rejoice at the sight of this powerful figure. The second verse continues this image, with the addition of the idea that God wraps himself in light. This light is so powerful that it causes darkness to flee, trembling at the mere sound of God's voice.

The chorus of the song is simple but impactful. The lyrics repeat the question "How great is our God?" as a way of emphasizing just how powerful and awe-inspiring God truly is. The second part of the chorus tells us that the whole world will see God's greatness, suggesting that God's power is not limited to one particular group of people, but is universal and undeniable.

The third verse of the song touches on the idea of God's eternal nature. God, as the song says, "stands age to age" and holds time itself in his hands. God is both the beginning and the end and encompasses all of existence. The final part of this verse highlights the Christian concept of the Trinity, specifically mentioning the "Godhead Three in One" which refers to the idea that God is one being in three persons (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). The verse finishes with the image of the Lion and the Lamb, two powerful and contradictory animals representing different facets of God's nature.

The final verse of the song declares that God is the name above all names and is deserving of all praise. The singer's heart overflows with gratitude and admiration for God's greatness, and they are unable to contain it. The chorus is repeated several times to drive home the message that God's greatness is universal and undeniable.

Back in 1989 this was cutting edge music. I remembered when Greg Laurie took over the Monday night "Youth Service" these guys made their premier. In fact a lot of Christian artist got their start at the Monday Night service at Calvary Chapel of Costa Mesa. I got my start in music ministry on a Monday night Bible study at CCCM. Spring of 1987. With my $75.00 guitar sang the song "Trust in You" to a packed out church. After that I kept getting request from other churches. Wow that was 28 years ago!!
28 years still traveling around the world singing for the Lord.
