All In Love Is
Marc Anthony Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Na ha, ah-ah ha
Ah ha
When you hold me like this
So many memories fill my eyes
The first time we kissed
The times we nearly said good-bye
Tested and tried and still true
And stronger than we ever knew
Love is all
The laughter and the tears that fall
The mundane and the magical
Love is all
All is love
The careless word, the healing touch
The getting and the giving of
All is love
There's a me you've always known
The me that's a stranger still
The you that feels like home
And the you that never will
But still here we lie
Tender and trusting and true
With everything that we've been through
Love is all
The laughter and the tears that fall
The mundane and the magical
Oh, love is all
All is love
The careless word, the healing touch
The getting and the giving of
All is love
All the glory
All the pain
All the passion
That turns to ashes
Only to rise again
Love is all
The laughter and the tears that fall
The mundane and the miracle
Love is all
All is love
The careless word, the healing touch
The getting and the giving of
All is love
The song "All In Love Is Fair" by Marc Anthony is a poignant ballad that speaks to universal truths about love and loss. The opening lines suggest that love is a game and that all is fair, but the subsequent lines challenge this idea. The vow to stay in love is predicated on the idea that two people are united, but time changes everything. Even though the future is unknown, it is certain that things will change. The line "the road you leave behind, ahead lies mystery" speaks to the idea that once you leave something behind, there are consequences that are uncertain. The chorus repeats the idea that all is fair in love, but then goes on to recount a story of leaving someone behind.
The middle section of the song speaks to the idea that fate is a chance, and sometimes it is good, sometimes it is bad. The singer then tosses a coin to make a decision about staying in love with the other person. Ironically, this section of the song speaks to the idea that love is a game, and that sometimes winning means losing. The final section of the song returns to the idea of the writer taking his pen to write the words "all in love is fair." This repetition of the opening line, now in the present tense, suggests that the singer is trying to convince himself of the truth of this idea.
Interestingly, the song was written by Stevie Wonder in 1973 and first recorded by him for his "Innervisions" album. It was later covered by many artists, including Barbra Streisand, Frank Sinatra, and George Benson. The song speaks to a universal truth about love - that it can be both beautiful and painful, and sometimes love requires sacrifice. Additionally, it showcases Marc Anthony's ability to interpret powerful, emotional music.
