DON'T TELL ME IS LOVE
Marc Anthony Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And I'm sensing you want more
I don't need someone who complicates me
And it's not that I don't care
But there's some things I can't share
Girl, I told you I'm not there
I don't need someone to own me
Girl, a lover is all I need
I'm the one who needs to hold me
since I met you, I've been hearing the same thing
And it seems it's all we talk about lately
So before you go out on the limb
Don't tell me it's love
It's that look in your eyes that betrays me
And the things that you do to amaze me
Don't tell me it's so
What I'm offering's what you see
I'm giving you my honesty
And I'm sorry if it hurts to hear the truth
And maybe I will find in time
That all along girl, you were right
That I should have made you mine
But for now I still believe
That I don't need someone to own me
Just a lover is all I need
And someone who's gonna hold me
since I met you, I've been hearing the same thing
And it seems it's all we talk about lately
So before you go out on the limb
Don't tell me it's love
It's that look in your eyes that betrays me
And the things that you do to amaze me
Don't tell me it's so
The lyrics of "Don't Tell Me It's Love" by Marc Anthony convey a clear message from the singer to his significant other. The song is about a couple who have been through the same conversation before. The singer senses his partner wants more from the relationship than he can offer. He doesn't want someone who complicates his life, but rather a lover who will hold him, not own him. Although he cares for his partner, there are some things he cannot share, and he is not ready to take the relationship to the next level. He needs time to figure out what he wants, without feeling pressured or forced into something he is not ready for.
The song builds on this theme, with the singer offering his honesty and apologizing if his words hurt his partner. He acknowledges that perhaps, in time, he will realize that he should have embraced the relationship, but for now, he needs to hold onto his independence. The chorus repeats the phrase, "Don't tell me it's love." The singer pleads with his partner not to use that word or phrase unless he is sure that love is what they have.
The song reflects a common situation in many relationships. It is an insightful interpretation of the tensions that can arise when a couple is at different stages of their relationship. The lyrics melodic tune, and Marc Anthony's soulful voice create a sentimental heartfelt song. The guitar accompanies Anthony's vocals and gives the song a mellow vibe.
