The lyrics of Marc Anthony's song Lamento Borincano tells the story of a jibarito (a Puerto Rican peasant) who is excited to bring his cargo of goods to the city, hoping to uplift his impoverished family. He is full of hope and happiness, planning to use the profits from the sale to buy a new dress for his wife and take care of his horse. However, when he arrives in the market, he is met with disappointment as no one wants to buy his goods due to the widespread poverty in the town. He laments the situation of his beloved Borinquen and wonders about the future of his family and his homeland. The song carries a tone of sadness, nostalgia, and longing for the hope of a better future.
