The Wanderer
Marc Broussard Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Dance for me sweetheart while I strum my guitar,
You sure look pretty tonight,
I've just come off the road and I could use the company,
That would suit me just fine

Now I've seen a lot of special things around this world,
You can see them too, you can,
What's that you ask?
I have no name I have no name,
For I am known only as man,
I am known only as man

I'm a wanderer,
I have no place or time,
I'm just drifting on this lonely road of mine,
If you like you can come along with me,
But I promise you that I am not the man I used to be

Now you and I we've seen our share of ups and downs,
Somewhere we just lost hope,
I can't change the past but who cares?
Your love is all I've ever known,
Your love is all I've ever known

I'm a wanderer,
I have no place or time,
I'm just drifting on this lonely road of mine,
And if you would accept me for me,
Then I promise you that there's a better man inside of me
Then I promise you that there's a better man inside of me
Then I promise you that there's a better man inside of me

Dance for me sweetheart while I strum my guitar,
You sure look pretty tonight

Overall Meaning

In Marc Broussard's song The Wanderer, the singer, a wandering musician, meets a woman who catches his eye. He asks her to dance while he plays his guitar and muses to her about his life on the road. He describes himself as having "no place or time," drifting along a lonely road. Despite his wandering nature, he finds solace in the company of the woman he is with. He speaks of having seen "a lot of special things around this world," but he has no name - he is simply known as man.

The song speaks to the human desire for connection and companionship, even when one is living a nomadic and transient lifestyle. The Wanderer is searching for something more than just a journey, and he seems to have found it in this woman. However, he also acknowledges that he is not perfect; he tells her that he's not the man he used to be, but he promises that there is a better man inside of him. The song is ultimately a plea for acceptance, for someone to see past his wanderlust and love him for who he is.
