The lyrics of "Vive le Roi" by Marc Lavoine depict the social and political situation in France during the late 80s to early 90s. The chorus repeats the phrase "Vive le Roi, vive la Reine, vive le Président" (Long live the King, long live the Queen, long live the President), which is a nod to the French national anthem "La Marseillaise" that says "Vive le Roi" but was changed to "Vive le Président" after the French Revolution. This repetition of the phrase emphasizes the desire for stability and leadership.
The verses reflect the struggles faced by the people of France, from their willingness to believe in false promises ("On boit le Canada Dry, On y croit comme si c'était vrai" - We drink the Canada Dry, we believe it as if it were true) to their solidarity with world issues such as hunger and disease, while also acknowledging their own personal goals ("Et le reste du temps on essaye de s'en sortir" - And the rest of the time we try to get by/ survive). The final lines of the song "On n'est pas des dupes, on n'est pas des cons, pas des pions de Backgammon" (We are not fools, we are not idiots, not pawns in Backgammon) assert the idea that the French people are not to be underestimated and that they are actively fighting for their own futures.
Overall, "Vive le Roi" is a reflection of the tumultuous times of France, the people's desire for stability and leadership, and their willingness to fight for their rights and future.
