The best takeaways for me were:
"A meaningful specific or a wandering generality", Zig Ziglar
Social Media - "you are not the customer" , " you are the product"
"Social Media was optimized to make you anxious until you can use it again"
"It extracts from you nervous energy, not productive output and keeps users from doing important work."

#QOTD - those that know me....

Great show Gary & Seth...love the energy both of you bring to the table...

@marshmello_dematt

+Alex Sandalis Agreed but I think it's the best because it reveals a deeper truth. I had to 'rewind' like umpteen thousand times to fully absorb it. It's when Seth talks about how there's a whole legion of peeps out there who 'think' they are using social media in the way that it was meant to be used but what they're actually doing is actually becoming the product themselves. What they're actually doing is using social media in the exact fashion that it was designed to be utilised....meaning 'almost addictively'.

24:23 <Seth> "....You are not the customer, you are the product. It was optimized to make you anxious until you use it again. It was optimized to extract from you nervous energy not productive output." I like how he qualifies the opening statement......'problem with <some>' social media.

I've had to think about this long and hard since yesterday.......and reflect. I reflect. It's *MY superpower.....heheh. (Vayner-reference).
With this insight, I am reviewing how I use social media and consider how I am being manipulated by its' design.
I must decide how I want to show up on social media and how I allow it to influence me and what 'body of work'...so to speak I would like to leave.

I've recently seen consumerism understood like this...an evolution. 1st it was: Buy Product >>which became: we Buy Experiences >> We seek to become the Product by our purchases. >> What do I want to leave as 'my body of work' when we transcend product purchasing. What Seth discerned was that...many get sucked into the machine thinking that they've arrived when they've ended up abandoning their authenticity without even realizing it. This is the most fascinating episode to date. Many layers and then they just both end up thinking that each other is arguing a different point. Much gnashing of teeth and then they all slap backs 'n it's all good....The End. :D!!!

I truly admire how patient Seth Godin was. A testament to the kind of man he is.

@dayangmelati6597

I am a bit annoyed how impatient Gary is... :( No doubt I am a fan of Gary but come onnnn

@BASEDinMaine

Much respect for Seth for being such a gentle and patient man BUT being able to set a calm and clear boundary @24:00 -- And much respect for Gary for always being willing to be 'corrected' by Seth and controlling his unbridled energy and enthusiasm. Seth is a person he also cares for and respects (even if Gary gets revved up again and again throughout ALL his interviews, that ridiculous enthusiasm is part of his persona and he is willing to get checked back because he's engaged with the people around him).

Not disagreeing with anything said here though :)

@BASEDinMaine

Gary does get out of control though, gosh.

@ThePowerMoves

LOL yeah, I've done a video analysis of that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSVyj3IOCh4

Agreed, but I think when one has to do with Gary Vee one has to factor in having to patiently think outside of the box.

I am in awe. Seth Godin just keeps impressing me! He exudes such calmness and wisdom. Pure gold! And I love how he puts Gary in his place.

There is great insights in this chat, but this is the first episode I’ve watched where I closed it before it finished. It was tough to stay focused with the jumping in and cutting off style. You’ve asked for feedback on the format before, so that’s my feedback. If you have guests on an episode please create room for guests to finish what their thoughts better ✌🏼

@chandlerbing7269

+Levi Allen seth was the one who was annoying.

@Levi_Allen

Thanks for your perspective. I'm curious why I found this episode so tense and hard to listen to. I really do appreciate good debate, but something felt off to me.
