Letters
Marching Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We write letters
We feel that there are things to tell
You told me about the winter
I told you about the summer rain
You told me about your favorite band, I think they sound a little better in print than on tape

We write letters
We feel that good friends should be kept
You wrote about a secret
I went around and thought of it all day
You told me about your worries and good times you had and the contents of your fridge

(I told you about)
You told me what I did already know
(I told you about)
I told you what I could never rid of, too
(I told you about)
I quote you as if you words were scripture
(I told you about)
You told me that everything was alright

You need to live for yourself
You need to get friends where you live
You need to live for yourself
You need to stop writing to me
You need to live for yourself
You need to get friends where you live
You need to live for yourself
You need to stop writing to me

We wrote letters
You're putting an end to this
I wrote about a feeling
I know it should have stayed in my head
A great art is lost when I gave up
It should have stayed in my head

(I told you about)
You told me what I did already know
(I told you about)
I told you what I could never live up to
(I told you about)
I quote you as if your words were scripture
(I told you about)
You told me that everything was alright

You need to live for yourself
You need to get friends where you live
You need to live for yourself
You need to stop writing to me
You need to live for yourself
You need to get friends where you live

You need to live for yourself
You need to stop writing to me

Overall Meaning

The song "Letters" by Marching Band tells the story of a friendship that has been based on exchanging letters with each other. The correspondence between two friends has given them the opportunity to share their experiences, emotions, and thoughts. The two friends write about the different seasons, their favorite bands, secrets, worries, and good times. They also quote each other as if their words were scripture as they value each other's opinions and thoughts.

However, towards the end of the song, the lyrics reveal a growing distance between the two friends. One friend advises the other to stop writing to them and to start living for themselves. The other friend seems to be holding on to their past relationship and is writing about their feelings which they know should have stayed in their head. This loss of the friendship's intimacy is portrayed through the friend's request to end the letters.

The song's lyrics remind us of the fragility of friendships and how they can slowly erode over time. It also highlights the importance of individuality and personal growth. The need to live for oneself and make new friends where we live is crucial to our personal development and growth.
