Born in Boston, Massachusetts, she moved to Australia to play a featured role in the Australian production of Hair. Hines was then approached to play Mary Magdalene in the Australian production of Jesus Christ Superstar. Hines became the first black woman to play Mary Magdalene, and achieved a second major success.
A record contract followed and her first single released in 1974 was a cover version of James Taylor's "Fire And Rain". Most of her hit singles were released between 1976 and 1979, and included her cover versions of the Burt Bacharach/Hal David song "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself", and The Rolling Stones' "Jumpin' Jack Flash", and "What I Did For Love" (from A Chorus Line). Her biggest hit was the single that made number 2 in the charts in Australia: "You"; an up-tempo dance song, later covered in the United States by Rita Coolidge.
She continued to record and achieved a few more hits including the dance track "Your Love Still Brings Me To My Knees" in the eighties. "Flashdance, What A Feeling" (originally recorded by Irene Cara), and "Time of Our Lives" were both hits for Hines in 1999.
Blame It on the Boogie
Marcia Hines Lyrics

But I don't get no lovin' and that's no lie
We spent the night in Frisco at every kinda disco
From that night I kissed our love goodbye
Don't blame it on the sunshine
Don't blame it on the moonlight
Don't blame it on the good times
Don't blame it on the sunshine
Don't blame it on the moonlight
Don't blame it on the good times
Blame it on the boogie
That nasty boogie bugs me, but somehow how it has drugged me
Spellbound rhythm gets me on my feet
I've changed my life completely, I've seen the lightning leave me
And my baby just can't take her eyes off me
Don't blame it on the sunshine
Don't blame it on the moonlight
Don't blame it on the good times
Blame it on the boogie
Don't you blame it on the sunshine
Don't blame it on the moonlight
Don't blame it on the good times
Blame it on the boogie, woo
I just can't, I just can't
I just can't control my feet
I just can't, I just can't
I just can't control my feet
I just can't, I just can't
I just can't control my feet
I just can't, I just can't
I just can't control my feet
Sunshine
Don't blame it on the moonlight
Don't blame it on the good times
Blame it on the boogie
Don't blame it on the sunshine
Don't blame it on the moonlight
Don't on the good times
Blame it on the boogie
This magic music grooves me, that dirty rhythm fools me
The Devil's gotten to me through this dance
I'm full of funky fever, a fire burns inside me
Boogie's got me in a super trance
Don't blame it on the sunshine
Don't blame it on the moonlight
Don't blame it on the good times
Blame it on the boogie
Don't you blame it sunshine
Don't blame it on the moonlight
Don't blame it on the good times
Blame it on the boogie
Sunshine
Moonlight
Good times
Boogie
You just gotta sunshine
Moonlight
Good times
Boogie
Don't you blame it sunshine
You just gotta moonlight
You just wanna good times
Yeah, oh boogie
Blame it on yourself
(Sunshine)
Ain't nobody's fault
(Moonlight)
But yours and that boogie
(Good times)
All night long
(Boogie)
Can't stop that boogie
(Sunshine)
Ain't nobody's fault
(Moonlight)
But yours and that boogie
(Good times)
Dancin' all night long
(Boogie)
Blame it on yourself
(Sunshine)
Ain't nobody's fault
(Moonlight)
But yours and that boogie, boogie, boogie
(Good times)
All night long
(Boogie)
The lyrics of Marcia Hines's song Blame It On the Boogie describe how the singer's partner is always dancing, which wouldn't be a problem except for the fact that they don't receive any affection in return. The couple went to several discos, and since then, the singer has felt like their love is gone. The boogie is the one to blame for their problems, not the sunshine, moonlight, or good times. The boogie is followed by a particular rhythm that spells bounds the singer and, even if it bugs her, she's under its spell. This magic music grooves her, the dirty rhythm fools her, and somehow, the dance creates a funky fever inside her that leaves her in a super trance.
The lyrics show how the boogie has affected the singer's relationship negatively, as their partner's love for dancing keeps them away. Despite this, the song doesn't blame the partner's passion for boogie, but rather the boogie itself, personifying the rhythm. The boogie is depicted as a corrupting force, capable of drugging the singer and making them change their lives completely. Ultimately, the lyrics suggest that it's nobody's fault but the boogie, leaving listeners to interpret the song's message for themselves.
