Born in Boston, Massachusetts, she moved to Australia to play a featured role in the Australian production of Hair. Hines was then approached to play Mary Magdalene in the Australian production of Jesus Christ Superstar. Hines became the first black woman to play Mary Magdalene, and achieved a second major success.
A record contract followed and her first single released in 1974 was a cover version of James Taylor's "Fire And Rain". Most of her hit singles were released between 1976 and 1979, and included her cover versions of the Burt Bacharach/Hal David song "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself", and The Rolling Stones' "Jumpin' Jack Flash", and "What I Did For Love" (from A Chorus Line). Her biggest hit was the single that made number 2 in the charts in Australia: "You"; an up-tempo dance song, later covered in the United States by Rita Coolidge.
She continued to record and achieved a few more hits including the dance track "Your Love Still Brings Me To My Knees" in the eighties. "Flashdance, What A Feeling" (originally recorded by Irene Cara), and "Time of Our Lives" were both hits for Hines in 1999.
I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself

Just don't know what to do with myself
I'm so used to doing everything with you
Planning everything for two
And now that we're through
I just don't know what to do with my time
I'm so lonesome for you it's a crime
Going to a movie only makes me sad
When I'm not with you
I just don't know what to do
Like a summer rose
It needs the sun and the rain
Well I need your sweet love to ease all the pain
I just don't know what to do with myself
Don't know just what to do with myself
Baby if your new love ever turns you down
Come back i will be around
Just waiting for you
I don't know what else to do
I need your sweet love to ease all my pain
I just don't know what to do with myself
Don't know just what to do with myself
I don't know what to do with myself
I just don't know what to do with myself
I don't know what to do with myself
I don't know what to do with myself
Oh I wish I could find someone else
I don't know what to do
I just don't know what to do
I just don't know what to do
The lyrics to Marcia Hines's song "I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself" express the feelings of a person who has recently gone through a breakup and is struggling to adjust to life without their partner. The singer is so used to doing everything with their partner and planning for two that they feel lost and lonesome without them. They struggle to find joy in things that used to bring them happiness, like going to the movies or parties, and they long for their partner's presence to ease the pain they are feeling.
The lyrics use a metaphor of a summer rose needing both the sun and the rain to thrive, just as the singer needs their partner's love to ease their pain. The final lines of the song suggest that the singer is willing to wait for their partner, even if they move on to a new love, as they don't know what else to do without them.
Overall, the lyrics to "I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself" capture the universal feeling of heartbreak and the struggle to find oneself after a relationship ends.
