Kerstmis
Marco Borsato Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Iedereen weer even bij elkaar
De mooiste dag van heel het jaar

Hey, hey

Hey, hey
Het is kerstmis
Het is kerstmis

Oh, met kerst voelt alles altijd even fijn
Wanneer de liefde heerst en de angst verdwijnt
Gaan onze harten open, zijn de problemen klein
Oh, kon elke dag maar kerstmis zijn

Het is kerstmis
Het is kerstmis
Hey, hey
Het is kerstmis
Het is kerstmis
Het is kerst
Het is kerst
Het is kerstmis
Het is kerstmis
Het is kerstmis
Het is kerstmis
Het is kerstmis

Het is kerstmis
Het is kerstmis

1) What is Christmas ?
Today most people believe Christmas is a day where you should get together with your family and friends and have nice dinner. And maybe some gifts. However, this is not the real origin of Christmas. Originally, Christmas was a pagan holiday called Saturnalia (feast to celebrate that the worse part of the winter was over) and celebrated in Scandinavia. People believed in Odin and Krampus. See 00:54 in the video.
The part where the guy in the commercial, knows every little details of Christmas customs, yet acts like he doesn't know this one 0:54 is about. It's about Krampus. A demon that abducts children. Not so "leuk", as he claims.

2) Why is Christmas on the 25th of December ?
Because their parents, society and forefathers celebrate this on this day as well. However, originally this is a pagan holiday called Saturnalia (feast to celebrate that the worse part of the winter was over). However, the Catholic Church knew it was hard to get rid of this centuries old holiday, so they made up a lie. They claimed Jesus was born on this day, and therefore we should celebrate Jesus his birthday. In reality, they hoped people would forget about Saturnalia and celebrate Jesus. However, the Church did not know when Jesus was born and it was more likely he was born in Spring. However, this made up lie, could help Christianity to become the biggest religion on the world. Yet, some people left the Church and only wanted to follow the Bible and NOT the Pope who made up all kind of stuff, next to the Commandments of God. They were called Puritans. Or Protestants. They only wanted to follow the Bible and not the altered tricks (statues in the church / unofficial holidays) of the Pope.

3) Why do people decorate a pine tree ?
Pine trees grow in the North of Europe and people believed these trees had powers, because they could survive the cold winter. So, they took the tree inside their house and worshipped this tree. Basically, people nowadays have adopted this custom, without knowing the origin. Nowadays, people put a line tree in their house because everybody else does this. The decorated pine tree is associated with cozy feelings. Nobody knows about the pagan origin.
However, you should ask yourself, as a Christian: Is God content with me adopting a pagan custom, even if I don't believe in the magical powers of the pine tree?

The answer is: God says do not follow the feast of the disbelievers or worship idols. So, you should stay away from pagan customs. Even if you don't worship them, it is weird to adopt them. You would also not put a statue of Satan in your room, even if you don't worship, but it just looks cool. There are many cool wallpapers of a devil or woman with horns. But you would never put them up your wall, would you? Do you really think God would be pleased by that?

Ik heb weinig met Marco, maar ik vind dit dus wel weer een leuk nummer. Lekker vrolijk en uptempo. Beter dan al die slaperige ballads van Marco.
