Oh Why
Marcomarche Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
wake a person
who pretend
to be asleep
you can see
the person sleep
who pretend
or you can
touch a person
who pretend
to be hurt
oh why
oh why
oh why
i don't know why
or you can
happy person
who pretend
to be happy
you can try
house in the fire
but
it won't do you no good
Marcomarche's "Oh Why" delves into the idea of pretense and people hiding their true emotions. The opening lines, "all you can wake a person who pretend to be asleep," suggest that sometimes people act like they are sleeping or unaware of what is happening around them even when they are fully alert and knowledgeable. This relates to the idea of people pretending not to know something or turning a blind eye to issues without taking action. The next lines, "you can see the person sleep who pretend to be away," imply that people may appear absent or disinterested when in reality they are very engaged and present. This can be seen in situations where people may act like they do not understand what is being discussed when in fact they do.
The next set of lines, "or you can touch a person who pretend to be hurt," speak to the idea of people feigning emotions. Someone can put on a front and pretend to be hurt when they are not really affected by a situation. The repetition of the phrase "oh why" throughout the song suggests the confusion or frustration that can come with trying to understand why people act in these ways. The last lines, "you can try a house in the fire, but it won't do you no good" may be interpreted as a metaphorical statement implying that even if you try to fix something that is pretending to be broken, it may not make a difference.
