Moana:
I count the steps from one end
Of my island to the other
It's a hundred steps from where I sleep to the sea
And when I say I've learned all there is to know
Well, there's another
Little island lesson Gramma Tala shows me
I know where I am
From the scent of the breeze
The ascent of the climb
From the tangle of the trees
From the angle of the mountain
To the sand on our island shore
I've been here before

There's gotta be more
I know there's more
There's always more
Someday I'll be
Out on the sea
And I'm gonna see more

There's gotta be more
I know there's more
There's always--

Tui and Villagers:
Moana, slow down!

Moana:
Sorry! I'm in somebody's way
They do the same thing everyday
They work, they eat, they sleep
They pray, they tell me

Moana and Villagers:
"Moana, calm down!"

Moana:
That's all they ever seem to say
The other kids
Just dance and play
How can you play?
There's so much out there to explore

Tui:
She stares at the sky
She stumbles down the beaches
She mumbles all the names
That her Gramma Tala teaches

Moana:
And I wanna soar

Tui:
With one foot here
And another in the distant past

Moana:
So much to explore

Sina:
She's growing up too fast

Moana:
Like I've said before
There's gotta be more
I know there's more
There's always more
One day, I'll be brave
And sail on the wave
That leads me to more

There's gotta be more
I know there's more
There's always more

My father, the chief
Says don't cross the reef
But, oh, every turn I take
Every trail I track
Every path I make
Every road leads back to the sea
I'm standing at the edge of the sea
As they all say

Moana and Villagers:
"Moana, slow down"
"Moana, dream small"
"Moana, don't drown"

Moana:
Can you drown at the call of the sea?
'Cause I can hear it calling me

Matai Vasa and Wayfinders:
Aue, aue!

Moana:
A thousand years ago
We used to sail to distant islands
A thousand years ago
Maui spoke to the sea
So maybe, just maybe
I was born to break the silence
I know my story
Could be extraordinary
I know my story
Doesn't end at the shore

There's gotta be more
I know there's more
There's always more
I'm gonna break through
And find something new
I'm gonna find more

There's gotta be more
I know there's more
There's always more
One day, I'll decide
To roll with the tide
And I'm gonna see...

Villagers:
Moana, stand tall

Moana:
I will cross the divide
I will ride
I will see what's on the other side

Villagers:
Moana, stand proud

Moana:
With the ocean as my guide
On the tide

I will go where no one's ever been before
There's always more!

Overall Meaning

The song "More" from Disney's "Moana" is all about Moana's longing for adventure and her desire to discover what lies beyond her island. The song begins with Moana counting the steps from one end of her island to the other, emphasizing her familiarity with her surroundings. However, despite having a deep understanding of her home, Moana feels there's something missing and longs for something more than the mundane tasks of everyday life. Throughout the song, Moana struggles to contain her desire to explore, and the villagers constantly urge her to calm down and not push herself too much.

Moana's connection to her heritage and desire to explore are central themes of the song. She constantly seeks inspiration and guidance from her grandmother Tala, who fills her head with stories of voyages to distant lands. However, her father and other villagers discourage her from straying too far and insist that she stick to her duties as a future leader. Moana's determination to discover what lies beyond her island and chart her own path is evident in the final verse, where she declares that she will cross the divide and go where no one has ever been before.

Overall, "More" is a powerful and introspective song that captures the essence of Moana's longing for adventure and self-discovery.

This song really helps me get by! How Far I'll Go really fits Moana, but I find this more relatable to me. I live in Canada, and I'm moving to England to study abroad for three years, so the way she sings about longing to go overseas really gets to me.

My favourite part is 'I know where I am from the scent of the breeze, the ascent of the climb, from the tangle of the trees, from the angle of the mountain to the sand on our island shore. I've been here before', then goes into the chorus. I grew up here, and I know every nook and cranny like the back of my hand. It's everything I've ever known, but I always thought there's gotta be more to life than that, y'know?

I especially relate to the part where Moana's dad interrupts her chorus to tell her to slow down! My relatives say I'm growing up too fast. They want me to stay because they don't want things to change, which is understandable in spite of my goals.

Then there's the part that goes 'a thousand years ago, we used to sail to distant islands'. My relatives immigrated to Canada from Asia for a better life, and they would tell me a ton of stories about the adventures of life and getting to where they are now. My story doesn't end at the shore either!

All in all, I'm pretty nervous about going away. It's a huge step, but one that I'm willing to take. This song helps remind me that although it'll be hard, there's still so much to look forward to!

More - Marcy harriell

I count the steps from one end of my island to the other
It's a hundred steps from where I sleep to the sea
And when I say I've learned all there is to know
Well there's another little island lesson
Gramma Tala shows me

I know where I am from the scent of the breeze
The ascent of the climb
From the tangle of the trees
From the angle of the mountain
To the sand on our island shore
I've been here before

There's gotta be more
I know there's more, there's always more
Someday I'll be out on the sea
And I'm gonna see more
Yes, there's gotta be more
I know there's more, there's always—

Moana, slow down

Sorry! I'm always in somebody's way
They do the same thing every day
They work, they eat, they sleep, they pray
They tell me

"Moana calm down"

That's all they ever seem to say
The other kids just dance and play
How can you play?
There's so much out there to explore

She stares at the sky, she stumbles down the beaches
She mumbles all the names that her Gramma Tala teaches

With one foot here and another in the distant past

She's growing up too fast

Like I said before
There's gotta be more
I know there's more, there's always more
One day I'll be brave and sail on the wave
That leads me to more

There's gotta be more
I know there's more, there's always more
My father the Chief, says "Don't cross the reef"
But oh every turn I take, every trail I track
Every path I make, every road leads back to the sea
I'm standing at the edge of the sea
As they all say

"Moana slow down
Moana dream small
Moana don't drown"

Can you drown at the call of the sea?
'Cause I can hear it calling me

Aue, aue

A thousand years ago, we used to sail to distant islands
A thousand years ago, Maui spoke to the sea
So maybe, just maybe, I was born to break the silence
I know my story could be extraordinary
I know my story doesn't end at the shore

There's gotta be more
I know there's more, there's always more
I'm gonna break through, and find something new
I'm gonna find more

There's gotta be more
I know there's more, there's always more
One day I'll decide to roll with the tide
And I'm gonna see

Moana stand tall

I will cross the divide, I will ride
I will see what's on the other side

Moana stand proud

With the ocean as my guide, on the tide
I will go where no one's ever been before
There's always more

This Moana is a different Moana than the one in the movie. Movie Moana wants to sail for the sake of the ocean that calls her. This Moana knows the world doesn't end at her island, and the ocean is her means of discovering what else the world offers and making something of her life that hasn't been done before. She has spent her life hearing the stories of all the sights her ancestors saw and the adventures they had. Also, it sounds like the ocean used to communicate or, at least, cooperate with her people, but it went silent for some reason which might be why they don't go passed the reef anymore since it is probably more dangerous now. She believes she might be the one to take the risk and cross the ocean, finding these out of reach adventures and possibly breaking the ocean's silence.

But oh every turn I take, every trail I track
Every path I make, every road leads backto the sea
I'm standing at the edge of the sea
As they all say

[MOANA and SINA]
"Moana slow down
Moana dream small
Moana don't drown"

[MOANA]
Can you drown at the call of the sea?
'Cause I can hear it calling me

[ANCESTORS]
Aue, aue

[MOANA]
A thousand years ago, we used to sail to distant islands
A thousand years ago, Maui spoke to the sea
So maybe, just maybe, I was born to break the silence
I know my story could be extraordinary
I know my story doesn't end at the shore

There's gotta be more
I know there's more, there's always more
I'm gonna break through, and find something new
I'm gonna find more

There's gotta be more
I know there's more, there's always more
One day I'll decide to roll with the tide
And I'm gonna see

[VILLAGERS]
Moana stand tall

[MOANA]
I will cross the divide, I will ride
I will see what's on the other side

[VILLAGERS]
Moana stand proud

[MOANA]
With the ocean as my guide, on the tide
I will go where no one's ever been before
There's always more

I like the song they went with too, but I can’t help but love the sense of wanderlust this one gives. It feels like Moana’s being pulled to the water like a magnet.

Sometimes I really wish that they didn't release outtakes and cut songs like this. Because, like, no, I don't want this to replace How Far I'll Go because that's the better song for the scene and vibe. But this is a really wonderful song that gets stuck in my head a lot and I feel like with lyric changes this still has potential to live on in another project instead of just living on Disk 2 of a Deluxe Edition soundtrack for the rest of eternity

The Fearless Four

same with "Home" from the Frozen II soundtrack :/ "More" and "Home" actually kinda have similar vibes.. a pity that they couldn't figure out another use for those charming melodies..
