Anyone but Me
Mardo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well you think you don't need me,
So you pick up and leave me
It's a point I won't argue,
'Cause I don't even love you

You wanna talk about class?
That would really be a gas
Mama let me make it clear,
Call somebody who cares

Yeah, oh yeah, yeah,
You're gonna need somebody,
Yeah, oh yeah, yeah
You're gonna need somebody,
Anyone... But me
Yeah, oh yeah, yeah

I used to think about forever,
Now I'm thinking more like never
But sugar ever since you left me,
It's feeling good just to be me

You wanna call each other names,
Telling people it's a shame,
Baby, lemme make it clear
Call somebody who cares

Yeah, oh yeah, yeah,
You're gonna need somebody,
Yeah, oh yeah, yeah
You're gonna need somebody,
Anyone... But me

Yeah, oh yeah, yeah,
Do yourself a favor, ask around,
In your city, with someone...
... Anyone but me

Yeah, oh yeah, yeah,
You're gonna need somebody,
Yeah, oh yeah, yeah

You're gonna need somebody,
Anyone but me

Overall Meaning

In Mardo’s song “Anyone but Me,” the singer addresses someone who left him and thinks that he doesn’t need him. Mardo acknowledges that the person left him and that he won’t argue about it. He even admits that he doesn’t love the person. Mardo then sarcastically suggests they talk about class, implying that the person lacks it, and tells them to call somebody who cares if they really want to talk. The chorus repeats the phrase “you’re gonna need somebody, anyone but me.”

Mardo then talks about how he used to think about forever, but since the person left him, he’s realized that he’d rather not think about forever with them anymore. Instead, he’s happy to just be himself. The second half of the second verse deals with name-calling and how Mardo suggests that the person call someone who cares if they want to complain. The chorus repeats again, emphasizing how the person will need someone else eventually, just not Mardo.

Overall, the song depicts a person who is done with someone who left them and is content to move on and let the person go. Mardo’s use of sarcasm and wit in the lyrics give the song a light-hearted yet empowering tone.
