80's Mercedes
Maren Morris Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh oh, oh oh, oh
Oh oh, oh oh, oh
Still runs good, built to last
Moves like a hula girl on the dash
She ain't made for practicality
Yeah, I guess she's just like me

It's Saturday night, about time to go
Got my white leather jacket and a neon soul
Once I turn on the radio I'm ready to roll, roll, ready to roll

Feel like a hard-to-get starlet when I'm driving
Turning every head, hell I ain't even trying
Got them Ray-Ban shades pretty in pink
Call me old school but hey

I'm a nineties baby
In my eighties Mercedes
I'm a nineties baby
In my eighties Mercedes

Oh oh, oh oh, oh
Oh oh, oh oh, oh
Pop the top down like a summer dream
She's my teenage time machine
Just keeps getting sweeter with age
She's classic through any decade

The sun's in the sky, glitter on the seats
You can try, but the Benz is hard to beat
So, hey, if you want you can ride with me, ride, ride with me

Feel like a hard-to-get starlet when I'm driving
Turning every head, hell I ain't even trying
Got them Ray-Ban shades pretty in pink
Call me old school but hey

I'm a nineties baby
In my eighties Mercedes
I'm a nineties baby
In my eighties Mercedes

Oh oh, oh oh, oh
Oh oh, oh oh, oh
It's Saturday night, about time to go
Got my white leather jacket and a neon soul
Once I turn on the radio I'm ready to roll, roll, ready to roll

Feel like a hard-to-get starlet when I'm driving
Turning every head hell I ain't even trying
Got them Ray-Ban shades pretty in pink
Call me old school but hey

I'm a nineties baby
In my eighties Mercedes
I'm a nineties baby
In my eighties Mercedes

Oh oh, oh oh, oh
Oh oh, oh oh, oh

Oh oh, oh oh, oh
Oh oh, oh oh, oh

Overall Meaning

The song "80's Mercedes" by Maren Morris is about a classic car, but it's also a metaphor for the singer herself. She sees similarities between the car, which is "built to last" and "ain't made for practicality," and herself. Like the car, Morris is unique and not necessarily built for the practicalities of life. She goes on to describe a night out, dressed in her white leather jacket and ready to roll, feeling like a "hard-to-get starlet" and turning heads as she cruises around in her classic car.

The lyrics of the song evoke a sense of nostalgia for the 80s and 90s, a time when Morris was a child. The car symbolizes the timelessness of the era, and how the singer feels connected to it despite being a child of the 90s. The line "I'm a nineties baby, in my eighties Mercedes" emphasizes this connection to the past, using the car as a metaphor for the singer's own sense of identity.

Overall, "80's Mercedes" is a fun and nostalgic song that celebrates the beauty and timelessness of classic cars, while also exploring the singer's own sense of identity and connection to the past.

Clever music production: 80s Mercedes = 80s sequencing; 90s baby = 90s radio/acoustic sound of the day. This is how/why this song -- even though is country -- can play in any genre that can use the 80s style sequencing. A+++ for production. She can play in pop; house; trance any music genre out there and fit right in.

@ClassicTVMan1981X

Sheena Easton did her early songs that way, too, like her lone U.S. number 1 hit "Morning Train (Nine to Five)"

After losing my wife, and severe depression, I bought my dream car. A perfect and hyper rare 91 trans am convertible, the passenger seat will forever be a ghost. But man, I feel this song so hard, car runs perfect on those sunset summer nights by the coast. People often say, I haven't seen you smile in years. Thanks Marren, the vibe is beautiful.

I'm so proud of you for finding some form of comfort in the little things again though to help you heal ๐Ÿ’ž๐Ÿค—๐Ÿ’ž you have immense strength to keep on keeping on through this life, and that's so inspiring ๐Ÿ’ฏ here's to the 2 of you being reunited in Heavenly happiness again someday and cruising down those streets of gold in your 80s Mercedes! ๐Ÿš˜๐Ÿฅฒ๐Ÿฅ‚๐Ÿ˜‡

This is so good. Marren's music is so silky and smooth. I usually cringe at "country" music that tries to be this poppy but it just works. It's got a country vibe but is modern enough to sound fresh and appeal to the audiences of this time. I want new music from her right now.
