Kingdom of One
Maren Morris Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

First light, a sacrifice
Bird's eye, saw the signs
Cold nights will take your life
Reach out and touch your faith
Give up on everything
To carry the world on a string

All you can give, all you can beg
All that you longed for, nothing compares
When nothin' is sacred, no one is safe

So you wanna play God? Come on
Is that all you got? Come on
Would you sell your soul? Burn it all
Everything that you love
Finally become second to none
In a kingdom of one

Dig down, far below
Lost souls, feed the crows
Hell's fire keeps you warm

All you can give, all you can beg
Look to your heart, but nothin' is there
When nothin' is sacred, no one is safe

So you wanna play God? Come on
Is that all you got? Come on
Would you sell your soul? Burn it all
Everything that you love
Finally become second to none
In a kingdom of one
In a kingdom of one

Come on
Come on
Come on
Come on

So you wanna play God? Come on
Is that all you got? Come on
Would you sell your soul? Burn it all
Everything that you love
Ash to ash, dust to dust
Everything in God above
Shed a tear, shed your blood
No, you cannot give enough

Finally become second to none
In a kingdom of one

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Maren Morris's "Kingdom of One" describe a person's journey towards becoming self-sufficient and losing touch with their own humanity. The song opens with "First light, a sacrifice" implying that the person has made a difficult decision or sacrifice that will set them on a path towards individuality. They see the signs, symbolically shown from a bird's eye view, and recognize the coldness of the world they are entering.

The chorus asks provocative questions that challenge the listener. The lyrics ask, "So you wanna play God? Come on, Is that all you got? Come on, Would you sell your soul? Burn it all, Everything that you love." The person is looking to fully control their life and surroundings, even if it means sacrificing everything they care about. The references to shedding tears and blood in the final lines of the chorus further illustrate that the person is willing to give their all to become self-sufficient.

The lyrics of "Kingdom of One" present the idea that self-sufficiency can lead to a point of isolation, where one becomes self-reliant and emotionally detached from their loved ones. The person has embarked on a journey that separates them from other people, and even themselves. The unrelenting chorus questions the validity of pursuing such an ambition, bringing an interesting dimension to the commentary on independence and individuality.

Ana Jenner

To me this song is ab Danny
Spoilers! When Sam asks Jon if he believes if Danny would give up her power to save everyone and Jon doesn’t knot what to say bc he has doubts if she would
So the lyrics
“ do you wanna play God”
“Would you sell your soul”
“ burn it all”
“everything that you love “
To me are ab if Danny is prepared to give everything she has to defeat the Night King or will she rather get the Throne first
I also think the wolves showing in the background represent how Jon would give up everything to save everyone
I might be looking into it to much but that’s how I interpreted it
