She was born July 17, 1959 in Bayshore, New York and worked as a music teacher prior to moving to Nashville in 1985 to take a songwriter job with Sparrow Records. By 1986, the label signed her as a performer and she scored her first CCM chart hit "Fight for God" from debut album NEVER FOR NOTHING.
Her sound for the most part is pop but at times has shown influences from Motown (as on SIMPLE HOUSE's "Talk About Love") and Celtic music (via the NEW IRISH HYMNS series beginning with a 2001 collaboration with Máire Brennan and Joanne Hogg).
Outside her own singing, she formed a publishing company (Modernm) and has produced for other artists. She has also authored several books and involved herself with charitable organizations battling AIDS and poverty.
Look Me in the Eye
Margaret Becker Lyrics

In the bottom of the drawer
Simple words, simple point of view
That I don't have much anymore
It said "I don't want fortune
I don't want fame
I only want the treasure
That time can't take away"
[Chorus]
Look me in the eye
Tell me if you see
Traces of yourself
Growing here in me
Tell me if you find
Your heart in mine
I pray you'll see your light
When you look me in the eye
Many years have come and gone
Since I wrote that page
And somehow with the passing time
I've let that truth slip away
Dear Lord remind me
Each and every day that your
Holiness, your Godliness
Is all that will remain
[Chorus]
Now I see you
Much too dimly
But someday we'll be
Eye to eye
When I see you
I want to hear you say
That you were proud of my life
Lord touch my heart
Center my soul
Till all I do
Is for You alone
[Chorus]
The lyrics of Look Me In The Eye by Margaret Becker speak on the concept of growth and introspection. The first verse begins with the artist discovering a letter she wrote a long time ago, expressing her simple desires in life. She admits to not having the same outlook today as she has lost sight of what is truly important. The chorus then follows where she asks the listener to look into her eyes and see if traces of the listener’s character and heart can be found within her. The verse after the chorus speaks of how time passes quickly and how she hopes to remind herself every day that God’s holiness and godliness are what matter the most.
The final verse speaks to how she hopes to one day meet God face to face and hear from Him that He is proud of her life. She asks God to help her center her soul and do everything only for Him alone.
Overall, the song speaks about the journey towards self-discovery and growth. It encourages the listener to look within and question what truly matters in life. It also stresses the importance of centering oneself with God to live a life of purpose and fulfillment.

In 1992 I was fortunate to see Margaret and Rich Mullins at the Broncho Bowl in Dallas. That historic venue is no longer there. But that was an amazing show by both her and Rich.
I saw her later at six flags and Rich later at a big church in South Arlington. But nothing compares to that March 1992 show in Dallas.
I was new to Christian music in 92 and it was this song that prompted me to buy the album. And it was mostly her that I wanted to see in Dallas. I was like who is Rich Mullins. Oh, right the Awesome God guy. Lol
I left that arena a huge Rich Mullins fan and although he is no longer with us I am still a fan. But I never stopped loving Margaret's music. If not for her and this song I may not have gone to see Rich and become his biggest fan.
Rich and Margaret had great songs that hit you hard spoke directly to your heart.
Avenue G was there that night also. They are a husband and wife duet and the lady has an amazing voice. Who was the other guy there that night? Was it Jeff something? Maybe someone can help me. But it was a great night of music topped off by some crazy guy with no shoes on stage.

I wasn't a Christian when she was around, so this is the first time I listen to her music, and I'm liking this better than most music on the radio today ♥♥♥

Gabriela Mallo It is and margaret becker is extreemily talented. Todays gospel is not the same. Honestly most of todays gospel music sucks.

Coming back from grabbing some lunch, this song comes on in my truck. I parked, ran inside to my office, woofed down a Double Double and went back to my truck to play this song over. Absolutely love it. Awesome song by an awesome artist. I saw her perform back in late eighties or early nineties. Bought a Margaret Becker T-shirt and had her sign it. She wrote...Ps 37:4 then signed it. She's great.

Margaret sang a song that many Christians would be fearful to sing today because of the amount of sin in their lives. Thank you Lord Jesus For Margaret Becker.
