Who Am I
Margaret Becker Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Who am I, Jesus
That You call me by name

I am counting the stars
On Your blackened sky
You call them all by name, You know them all by sight
In this sea of lights
I sense Your majesty
And I break at the thought that One so great
Could care for me

Who am I, Jesus
That You could call me by name
What could I ever do
To be loved this way
Who am I, Jesus
In Your eyes, tell me, who am I

I am counting the mountains
That I've laid at Your feet
And I'm reduced to tears when I think of how
You've moved them for me
In this storm of life
You've been my safe retreat
Through the wind and the fire You always were there
To carry me

CHORUS

No greater honor could I ever find
Than the privilege to love You for the rest of my life

CHORUS

REPEAT CHORUS

Overall Meaning

The song "Who Am I" by Margaret Becker is a powerful expression of the singer's awe and gratefulness towards Jesus. The lyrics begin with a question - "Who am I, Jesus, that You call me by name?" This rhetorical question sets the tone for the whole song, as the singer tries to comprehend the vast depth of God's love for them. The first verse describes the singer counting the stars on a dark night, marveling at how God knows each one by name. This expansive image of the heavens juxtaposed with the smallness of the singer's own existence evokes a sense of wonder and humility. The second verse continues this theme, with the singer counting the mountains they have laid at Jesus' feet and being reduced to tears at the thought of how God has moved them. Despite the storms of life, Jesus has been a safe retreat and a constant source of strength for the singer.

The chorus repeats the question "Who am I, Jesus?" and emphasizes the singer's amazement that they could be so loved by God. The final line of the chorus offers an answer to this question - "In Your eyes, tell me, who am I" - suggesting that the singer finds their true identity and worth in Christ's love. The song ends by saying that there is "no greater honor" than to love God for the rest of one's life, implying that the singer's ultimate goal is to live a life of faithfulness and devotion to Jesus.

My mother used to sing this song when I was little. It meant so much to me to see my pretty mother singing so sincerely. Now it means so to me to understand the lyrics. God is love :)

The closest I've ever been to God is when I was in the Navy and I would be the lookout on the back part of the ship and it was at night and I would look up to all the stars and in the middle of the ocean and think about the God the created all those stars and ocean loved me so much that He sent His only son the die on a cross for me. That thought over whelms me everytime I think of it. I've survived a stroke, a blood bacteria and lymphoma cancer. I'm alive today by the grace of God.

@Ja B I think she is still in Nashville helping young singers just getting into music.

@Nate Faust I did a Google search on her not too long ago to find out where she is. I think she’s directing Christian movies

I want to meet her in person and get to know her. I’ve seen her a few times in concert at different places so it would be great to meet her. Like I said in another post, I’ve survived a stroke a blood bacteria and cancer. You probably aren’t going to meet many people who have survived all 3 but I have. All by the grace of God. When we go through adversity in our lives, we have a choice to make. We can either allow the adversity to make us bitter or better. We can either become angry and bitter at God for allowing us to go through the adversity or we can allow God to teach us lessons to make us, better going through the adversity. Many believers pray that God will rescue them from the adversity they go through in life, but many times, God wants to teach us things we would never learn if we didn’t go through the adversity we are going through.

For those of us who are going through "electronic harassment" must consider that we are chosen for the front lines of this spiritual warfare and God must be Glorified in all things. Jeus is King of all Kings and Lord of all. Praise His Holy Name. Read the Word aloud daily. Pray aloud daily.
