New York City Hotel Blues
Margot & the Nuclear So and So's Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Seems like the only way out's through the back
The taxi cab is running late
And I gotta know now, honey, who?
What is the name of the man you choose?
I'm never gonna break your heart
Not unless I have to

Seems like the only way out's through the ditch
By the crummy old house where your mom used to live
And I've gotta know now, honey, who?
What is the name of the drug you do?
I'm never gonna break your heart
Not unless I have to

But the sun feels right
The hurricane winds are dying down
The sun feels right
The hurricane winds are dying down

Seems like the only way out's through the back
The taxi cab is running late
And I gotta know now, honey, who?
What is the name of the man you choose?
I gotta know now, honey, who?
What is the name of the man you choose?
I'm never gonna break your heart
Not unless I want to

But the sun feels right
The hurricane winds are dying down

The sun feels right
The hurricane winds are dying down

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Margot & the Nuclear So and So's's song New York City Hotel Blues seem to be about a failing relationship and the struggles that come with trying to keep it alive. The singer starts by describing how the only way out seems to be through the back, suggesting a sense of desperation and urgency. He then questions his partner about the man she has chosen over him, implying that there is another person involved in the relationship. He claims that he will never break her heart, but that he might have to do so if he has to.

The second verse is similar, except instead of talking about a man, the singer talks about the drugs that his partner is using. He questions her about the name of the drug she is using, perhaps suggesting that it is the reason for the breakdown of their relationship. Despite all of this, however, the singer seems to be holding onto some hope. He talks about the sun feeling right and the hurricane winds dying down, perhaps symbolizing a sense of calm and a chance for the relationship to be redeemed.

Overall, the lyrics seem to convey a sense of struggle and desperation in a failing relationship, as well as a glimmer of hope for the future.

I figured it out by watching. The chords are: B minor, E minor for the verse those two chords repeat a few times and then the "never gonna break your heart" part is C, G, E minor. The outro chords are just D and A minor. Hope this was a little helpful :)
