Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Mari Boine's Vuoi Vuoi Me are in her native Sami language. The song is a chant that evokes the spiritualism and essence of her culture. The energy of her singing is hypnotic and enchanting, and the lyrics hold a deep meaning that encompasses the Sami way of life. The piece starts with "Vuoi mu gollelottas, Vuoi mu beaiveidjalottas, giehka ja goaskin"; these phrases refer to the connection with nature and the environment that the Sami people respect and follow. The Sami way of life revolves around hunting, fishing, and reindeer herding.

The song continues with "Vuoi mu spalfu, Vuoi mu spalfu, miellevuol besiinis, Vuoi mu idjaloddi, ravddahis geahcastagainis," which relates to the Sami shamanic beliefs, where spirits are present in both animate and inanimate objects, and they can communicate with humans. The chant calls upon the spirits to awaken and connect with the people listening. The phrase "Vuoivuoi mu, Vuoivuoi mu" translates to "call me, call me" and is the refrain that repeats throughout the song.

The second part of the song continues with "Vuoivuoi daid iluid, Vuoivuoi daid iluid, skèaikkigavnnasmeriidisguin, Vuoi daid morrasiid, Vuoi daid morrasiid, salteganjalmearaidisguin, Vuoivuoi daid buollasiid, Vuoivuoi daid buollasiid, vuoi gesiid mearehis bahkaid." These phrases refer to the Sami connection with ancestors and their respect for the land. The Sami culture is a deeply spiritual one, and the song reflects the reverence and respect that they have for the natural world.

Overall, Vuoi Vuoi Me is a powerful chant that evokes the spirit of the Sami people. It encapsulates the essence of their culture, beliefs, and way of life, and is a beautiful representation of Mari Boine's music.

As a South African late 90s kid, I only knew the remixed deep house version by Henrik schwartz. Never thought even the original bangs this hard🙆🏾‍♂️. There's something special about this song and the singer man🤔👌🏾.
