Mari Hamada started her professional singing career in 1983, as a heavy metal idol, produced by Munetaka Higuchi, drummer of Japanese metal band Loudness. Her records were successful in the Japanese rock market. Later, she changed her musical style to AOR (adult oriented rock), with mainstream commercial and even international success. In 1989, she hit No. 1 on the oricon music charts for the first time, and performed at the Budokan hall two days successfully in the same year. Two of her songs where used by the NHK to promote the 1988 Seoul olympics games TV diffusions in Japan. She was the best-selling Japanese export artist from late 80's to mid-90's, since her records were popular abroad but not available outside Japan. She released her only international album in 1994, "Introducing...", a compilation of songs in English, supported by a European tour with Kim Wilde, and the same year released an international duet with Australian boys-band Indecent Obsession: "Fixing a Broken Heart"
So Long

So hurt
Wow wish me well
So far
So long yeah
So far
So long
Someday
So long
Wow wish me well
So hurt
So long
Wow wish me well
Alone now,so long now
Wish me well
Mari Hamada's song "So Long" is about a person who struggles to say goodbye to someone they love deeply. The opening lyrics reveal that the singer has been trying to muster the courage to say goodbye but hasn't been able to. As they tried to express their feelings, they felt overwhelmed with sadness. They described feeling an unexplained loneliness that enveloped them. When the singer tried to hold back their tears, the thread of the pain they had been trying to keep hidden from others had already broken. Despite their attempts to stop the flow of tears, they couldn't hold them back anymore.
The subsequent lyrics describe a situation where the singer is looking out the window in the middle of a melancholic afternoon. They are silently pondering about their future and wondering if they will ever find love again. They consider the possibility of giving up on love to preserve their sense of self. As the song progresses, they acknowledge that they will try again someday to love someone, but for now, they need to move on. The singer is alone now, and all they can say to the person they love is goodbye.
The song "So Long", which was released in 1987, was written by Mari Hamada herself.
