Quem me chamou, chamou pra sambar
A sua força me invade, o vento sopra e anuncia
O abebé reluz axé
Fiz um pedido pro Bonfim abençoar
Oxalá, Xeu Êpa Babá
Oh Minha Santa me proteja, me alumia
Trago no peito o Rosário de Maria
Sinto o perfume, mel, pitanga e dendê
No embalo do xirê, começou a cantoria
Vou no toque do tambor ô ô ô
Deixo o samba me levar, saravá
The lyrics of Maria Bethania's song "Maria" are about the power and strength of the goddess Oyá, who is associated with storms, winds, and change. The song begins with someone calling the singer to Mangueira, a neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro known for its samba schools. The singer declares that it's time to let loose and dance, and warns that she is "the girl of Oyá" and should not be messed with. She then invokes the spirit of Oyá and offers her faith, symbolized by a ceremonial abebé. She also asks for blessings from other deities, including Bonfim, Oxalá, and Xeu Êpa Babá, and seeks protection from the Virgin Mary.
The second half of the song describes the singer's performance at the Teatro Opinião, a legendary venue in Rio de Janeiro where many famous Brazilian musicians have played. She imagines herself as a queen bee, a wounded beast, and a song embroiderer, all while keeping the rhythm on her hand, pandeiro, and viola. She also references the green and pink colors of the Mangueira samba school, which has won many Carnival competitions in Rio. Finally, she exclaims "Explode coração" (heart explodes), a common refrain in Brazilian music that signifies intense emotion and passion.

A Dona Do Raio E Do Vento
Sou a casa do raio e do vento
Por onde eu passo é zunido, é clarão
E Iansã desde o meu nascimento
Tornou-se a dona do meu coração
O raio de Iansã sou eu
É vista quando há vento
E grande vaga, ela faz o ninho no rolar da fúria
E voa firma e certa, feito bala
