Medalha De São Jorge
Maria Bethânia Lyrics

Com tuas armas, teu perfil obstinado
Me guarde em ti meu santo padroeiro
Me leva ao céu em tua montaria
Numa visita a lua cheia
Que é a medalha da Virgem Maria
Do outro lado São Jorge guerreiro
Te guardo em mim meu santo padroeiro
A quem recorro em horas de agonia
Tenho a medalha da lua cheia
Você casado com a Virgem Maria
O mar e a noite lembram na Bahia
Orgulho e força, marcas do meu guia
Conto contigo contra os perigos
Contra o quebranto de uma paixão
Deus me perdoe essa intimidade
Jorge me guarde no coração
Que a malvadeza desse mundo é grande em extensão
E muita vez tem ar de anjo e garras de dragão
Fica ao meu lado São Jorge guerreiro
Com tuas armas, teu perfil obstinado
Me guarde em ti meu Santo Padroeiro
Me leva ao céu em tua montaria
Numa visita a lua cheia
Que é a medalha da Virgem Fria
Do outro lado São Jorge guerreiro
Põe tuas armas na medalha enluarada
Te guardo em mim meu Santo Padroeiro
A quem recorro em horas de agonia
Tenho a medalha da lua cheia
Você casado com a Virgem Maria
O mar e a noite lembram na Bahia
Orgulho e força, marcas do meu guia
Conto contigo contra os perigos
Contra o quebranto de uma paixão
Deus me perdoe essa intimidade
Jorge me guarde no coração
Que a malvadeza desse mundo é grande em extensão
E muita vez tem ar de anjo e garras de dragão
The lyrics of Maria Bethânia's song "Medalha De São Jorge" are a prayer to Saint George, also known as São Jorge in Portuguese. The singer calls for the saint's protection with his weapons and tenacious profile, and begs him to take her to heaven on his horse. She sees the medal of the full moon as the mark of the Virgin Mary, whom Saint George is believed to be married to in popular Catholic folklore. She asks Saint George to put his weapons in the enlivened medal and keep her protected. She acknowledges Sao Jorge as her patron saint that she turns to in moments of agony, hoping that he will defend her against the dangers of broken hearts and the cruelty of the world that disguises itself as an angel.
The lyrics also reveal Maria Bethânia's strong connection to her roots in Bahia, a state in Brazil with a rich cultural heritage that's often associated with African and Afro-Brazilian traditions. She celebrates São Jorge as her guide and protector, whose strength and pride are reminiscent of the sea and the night that mark her homeland. The last verse speaks of her intimacy with the saint and her confession of relying on him for protection against the world's malice, which can often appear to be benevolent but hide vicious claws.
Overall, the lyrics of Medalha De São Jorge are a heartfelt plea to São Jorge, asking for his guidance and protection, and acknowledging his powerful symbolism in Brazilian culture.
