At eighteen she moved to Lisbon, was soon hired to sing in the main fado houses and then the Estoril Casino.
Her first disc was in 1959. In 1963 - 64 she began musical experimentation, launching Pop-Fado, something criticized by traditionalists, but it resulted in a larger audience.
In 1967, she finally achieved broad success with songs Worth, First Love, and 20s.
In 1975, along with her husband and Antonio Mello Correia, she opened the restaurant Mr. Wine, where Da Fé is one of the attractions along the lines of the old tradition of fado houses. This restaurant became one of the important cultural centers in Lisbon.
Maria Da Fé is one of the few artists to take the Portuguese Fado to the Brazil (1,984 - 1987th), acting in major concert halls of the Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.

da força que a água tem
Minha mãe, eu sou do tempo,
da força que a água tem
Sou do mistério do vento,
que não sabe donde vem
Sou do mistério do vento,
que não sabe donde vem
Esta voz que canta em mim,
não a canta mais ninguém
Esta voz que canta em mim,
não a canta mais ninguém
Sou do mistério do fado,
que não sabe donde vem
Sou do mistério do fado,
que não sabe donde vem
Minha mãe, dai-me o talento,
que só o poeta tem
Que eu sou como o próprio vento,
que não sabe donde vem
Que eu sou como o próprio vento,
que não sabe donde vem
Minha mãe, o vosso amor,
pouco ou nada quase sem
Sou como a própria flor,
que não sabe donde vem
Sou como a própria flor,
que não sabe donde vem
Minha mãe, eu sou do tempo,
da força que o fado tem
Minha mãe, eu sou do tempo,
da força que o fado tem
Sou do mistério do vento,
que não sabe donde vem
Minha mãe, eu sou do tempo,
da força que o fado tem
Minha mãe, eu sou do tempo,
da força que o fado tem
Minha mãe, eu sou do tempo,
da força que o fado tem
Sou do mistério do vento,
que não sabe donde vem
Sou do mistério do vento,
que não sabe donde vem
In “Divino Fado,” Maria da Fé sings about her identity, which is rooted in the mystery and power of nature and of fado music. She declares that she is “do tempo,” from the time when water had strength and power. These lines suggest a connection to the primal elements of the natural world, which can be associated with the origins of life itself. She also identifies with the mystery of the wind, which cannot be traced back to a single source. This image of the wind symbolizes the enigma of her own voice, which she notes is unique to her and cannot be replicated by anyone else.
The lyrics continue with her declaring that she is “do mistério do fado,” from the mystery of fado music, which originated in the working-class neighborhoods of Lisbon. Fado is known for expressing sentiments of longing, sadness, and nostalgia, and it is often associated with the Portuguese concept of “saudade,” which encompasses a feeling of deep emotional longing. Maria da Fé is claiming that her own identity is connected to this emotional and artistic tradition, whose origins are likewise shrouded in mystery and whose power is difficult to explain.
Maria da Fé’s expression of her identity in “Divino Fado” is a powerful testimony to the impact of cultural and artistic traditions on our sense of self. She finds herself in the wind, the water, and the emotional landscape of fado, and through her voice, she brings these elements to life for her listeners.
