At eighteen she moved to Lisbon, was soon hired to sing in the main fado houses and then the Estoril Casino.
Her first disc was in 1959. In 1963 - 64 she began musical experimentation, launching Pop-Fado, something criticized by traditionalists, but it resulted in a larger audience.
In 1967, she finally achieved broad success with songs Worth, First Love, and 20s.
In 1975, along with her husband and Antonio Mello Correia, she opened the restaurant Mr. Wine, where Da Fé is one of the attractions along the lines of the old tradition of fado houses. This restaurant became one of the important cultural centers in Lisbon.
Maria Da Fé is one of the few artists to take the Portuguese Fado to the Brazil (1,984 - 1987th), acting in major concert halls of the Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.

Perguntaram-me ao ouvido
Valeu a pena
Vir ao mundo ter nascido
Com lealdade
Vou responder, mas primeiro
Consultei meu travesseiro
Tive porém, que lembrar o meu passado
Horas de boas do meu fado
E as más também
Valeu a pena
Ter vivido o que vivi
Valeu a pena
Ter sofrido o que sofri
Valeu a pena
Ter amado quem amei
Ter beijado quem beijei
Valeu a pena
Valeu a pena
Ter sonhado o que sonhei
Valeu a pena
Ter passado o que passei
Valeu a pena
Conhecer quem conheci
Ter sentido o que senti
Valeu a pena
Valeu a pena
Ter cantado o que cantei
Ter chorado o que chorei
Valeu a pena
Valeu a pena
Ter vivido o que vivi
Valeu a pena
Ter sofrido o que sofri
Valeu a pena
Ter amado quem amei
Ter beijado quem beijei
Valeu a pena
Valeu a pena
Ter amado quem amei
Ter beijado quem beijei
Valeu a pena
In the song Valeu A Pena, Maria da Fé reflects on the value of her life experiences with a calm voice. The opening verse asks if it was worth it to be born into the world. The answer, according to the singer, resides in her loyalty to herself. She consults her pillow and subsequently recalls both the good and bad moments of her past.
The chorus iterates the phrase "Valeu A Pena", which translates to "it was worth it" in English. The repetitive structure creates an affirmation of the songwriter's life experience. She lists all the moments, good and bad, throughout her life and affirms that they were all worth it in the end. The song is a reflection on the significance of the most significant moments in Maria da Fé's life.
The song seems to be about valuing one's past experiences and accepting both the good and the bad, but recognizing that they are all worth it in the end. Maria da Fé highlights this in each of the verses, listing the moments that shaped her life and making it clear that she wouldn't change a thing. The song's message is that our past experiences make us who we are today, and it's essential to appreciate them for everything they've taught us.
