She started her career as an actress, working in the theatre and in some of the most famous Spanish movies from the 1940 decade.
During the 1950s, she started singing professionaly, eventually abandoning her career as an actress in the 1960s. Since then, she has recorded more than 35 albums.
As a singer, she is specialized in traditional Spanish and Latin American music: bolero, copla, ballad, ronda, vals, and folk music (Peruvian, Argentinian, Mexican, and Venezuelan). Her voice tone is clear and slightly low, and she has an extremely proper Spanish pronunciation. She typically sings with the only company of guitars, requintos, and drums.
She singed for close to 30 years with the same group, Los Gemelos, formed by two twin brothers, Santiago López Hernández and Julián López Hernández, until the death of Santiago in the early 1990s.
La Canción Y El Poema
Maria Dolores Pradera Lyrics

Hoy que ya pasó la vida,
Hoy que me río si pienso,
Hoy que olvidé aquellos días,
No sé por qué me despierto
Algunas noches vacías
Oyendo una voz que canta
Y que, tal vez, es la mía.
Para que supieras
Cómo y cuánto te quería.
Quisiera morir ahora de amor,
Para que supieras...
Algunas noches de paz,
Si es que las hay todavía,
Pasando como sin mí
Por esas calles vacías,
Entre la sombra acechante
Y un triste olor de glicinas,
Escucho una voz que canta
Y que, tal vez, es la mía.
Quisiera morir ahora de amor,
Para que supieras
Cómo y cuánto te quería.
Quisiera morir ahora de amor,
Para que supieras...
In these lyrics from María Dolores Pradera's song La Canción Y El Poema, the singer reflects on the passage of time and the memories that come with it. She acknowledges that she has moved on from the past and forgotten some of the days that were once important to her, but there are still nights where she is haunted by a voice singing, possibly her own. The singer expresses a longing to die from love, as a way to convey the intensity of her feelings to the person she loves.
There is a sense of sadness and wistfulness in these lyrics, as the singer struggles with the memories of a relationship that may have ended. She suggests that the past has the ability to awaken dormant emotions, and even as time passes, certain things can still have a hold on us. The repetition of the desire to die from love is a poignant reminder of the power of intense emotions and the longing to connect with others.

Now that life has passed,

Now that I laugh when I think,

Now that I have forgotten those days,
No sé por qué me despierto
I don't know why I wake up
Algunas noches vacías
Some empty nights
Oyendo una voz que canta
Hearing a singing voice
Y que, tal vez, es la mía.
And maybe it's mine.
Quisiera morir ahora de amor,
I wish to die now of love,
Para que supieras
So you would know
Cómo y cuánto te quería.
How much and how I loved you.

Some peaceful nights,
Si es que las hay todavía,
If there are any left,
Pasando como sin mí
Passing by as if I'm not there
Por esas calles vacías,
Through those empty streets,
Entre la sombra acechante
Amidst the lurking shadow
Y un triste olor de glicinas,
And the sad scent of wisteria,
Escucho una voz que canta
I hear a voice singing
Y que, tal vez, es la mía.
And maybe it's mine.
