Filosofia / You Know I'm No Good
Maria Gadú Lyrics

Falando sempre mal do meu nome
Deixando de saber se eu vou morrer de sede
Ou se eu vou morrer de fome
Mas a filosofia hoje me auxilia
A viver indiferente assim
Nessa prontidão sem fim
Pra ninguém zombar de mim
Não me incomodo que você me diga
Que a sociedade é minha inimiga
Pois, vivendo nesse mundo
Vivo escravo do meu samba
Muito embora vagabundo
Quanto a você da aristocracia
Que tem dinheiro, mas não compra alegria
Há de viver eternamente
Sendo escravo dessa gente
Que cultiva hipocrisia
I told you I was trouble
And you know that I'm no good
In these lyrics, Maria Gadú expresses feelings of condemnation and indifference towards societal judgment and criticism. She starts by saying that the world condemns her and shows no pity, always speaking ill of her name. She feels unsure if she will die of thirst or die of hunger, emphasizing a sense of desperation and vulnerability.
However, she finds solace in philosophy, which helps her live with indifference. She adopts a facade of wealth to prevent others from mocking her, pretending to be someone she is not. She emphasizes that she does not mind if people say society is her enemy because she is trapped in the world and enslaved by her music, even though she acknowledges it may not always be respected by society.
In the second paragraph, Maria Gadú addresses the aristocracy, those who possess wealth but lack true happiness. She believes they will forever be slaves to the people who cultivate hypocrisy, suggesting that their wealth cannot buy them genuine joy or freedom. This critique showcases her belief in the superficiality and hollowness of material possessions and social status.
The final line, "I told you I was trouble, and you know that I'm no good," conveys her acknowledgment of her own flaws and the understanding that she is not perceived positively by others. It highlights her honesty about her troubled nature and the fact that she is aware she may not fulfill societal expectations or norms. This line also suggests that she may have warned someone about herself before, potentially alluding to a past relationship or encounter where her shortcomings were evident.
Overall, these lyrics showcase Maria Gadú's defiance towards societal judgment, her embrace of philosophy as a guiding principle, and her rejection of material wealth as a source of true happiness. She emphasizes the dichotomy between societal expectations and her own authentic self, unapologetically embracing her flaws and embracing a mindset of indifference towards societal norms.
