Eu não desejaria ao fogo, à febre um rei
Seja cangaceira a carta à Espanha
Seja d'ouro a cana, o canto servo, a lei
Sujeitando a mata a recriar o caos
A cada grito a porta aberta desespera
Aponta a flecha ao céu além
Cada caravela que espera o retorno da era
Quimera, a peixeira, o desdém
Dizimando o rei, o réu sou eu
Vitimando o réu, o rei sou eu
Cangaceiro febril da terra inteira, o erro é meu
Da mortalha a peixeira que usei
Cada prece iludida que preguei
Desbravando o meu peito sem fronteira
Agora eu sei
Consumando o rei, o réu sou eu
Vitimando o réu, o rei sou eu
Cangaceiro febril da terra inteira, o erro é meu
Da mortalha a peixeira que usei
Cada prece iludida que preguei
Desbravando o meu peito sem fronteira
Agora eu sei
Não se fere um rei a ferro e fogo
Eu não desejaria ao fogo, à febre um rei
Não se cala um canto, uma discórdia
A língua que separa a prece
Ilude o mesmo Deus
In "Reis," Maria Gadú contemplates the power dynamics between kings and their subjects, and the impact of individual actions on larger societal structures. She opens the song stating "Não se fere um rei a ferro e fogo" which translates to "A king can't be hurt with fire and sword." The line implies that kingship is a powerful and resilient force that cannot be easily toppled, even with extreme measures. However, in the next line, she expresses that she does not wish fire or fever upon a king, highlighting the empathy and compassion necessary to understand the pain and suffering of others.
The next lines, "Seja cangaceira a carta à Espanha, Seja d'ouro a cana, o canto servo, a lei" expand on this idea of societal structures and the various forms they take. Cangaceira refers to a type of bandit or outlaw that existed in the early 1900s in northeastern Brazil. By invoking this image, Gadú speaks to the marginalized populations that exist outside of typical power structures. She also references the sugar industry (cana), which has been a major source of wealth and labor exploitation in the country. The "canto servo" (servant song) and "lei" (law) further emphasize the idea of oppression and the ways in which societal structures can perpetuate it.
