Her first recital was at age five, and at age seven she was already playing Mozart Piano Concertos publicly. Two years later, she received Portugal's top prize for young musicians. In the following years, she studied with Professor Campos Coelho at the Lisbon Conservatory, taking courses in composition, theory, and history of music. She continued her studies in Germany, first in the Musikakademie of Munich with Rosl Schmidt and then in Hanover with Karl Engel.
International fame came in 1970, when she won the Beethoven Bicentennial Competition in Brussels. She has since then regularly performed with major orchestras throughout the world, interpreting works by Bach, Beethoven, Schumann, Schubert, Mozart, Brahms, Chopin and many other classical and romantic composers. She appears regularly with major world orchestras in Europe, America, Canada, Israel and Japan.
She appears as a solo artist and in chamber music: her many successful recordings include Moonlight, featuring Beethoven sonatas, Le Voyage Magnifique, the complete Impromptus of Schubert, Nocturnes and other works by Chopin, and Mozart Trios with Augustin Dumay (violin) and Jiang Wang (cello).
She won the Pessoa Prize in 1989. She also founded the Belgais Centre for Study of the Arts.
Gramophone (magazine) selected her recordings of the Chopin Nocturnes as the best version available: "I have no hesitation in declaring Maria Joao Pires – a pianist without a trace of narcissism – among the most eloquent master-musicians of our time" (Bryce Morrison).
In 2006 she moved to Lauro de Freitas—a town near Salvador, Brazil—and continues performing. At the time of her move, she commented that she had suffered much in Portugal due to her Belgais Centre project.

Madame Pires and Mozart are treasures of humanity. May she live long, God bless her so much. ❤️❤️❤️

Once music enters the Soul, there is no stopping; Age is no bar.

Every time “Mary John” plays you can almost see the ghost of Mozart nodding and saying “ yea that’s the way I like it “
@manueljose5644
Her name is Maria João (not Mary nor John). Please don't try to translate. It doesn't fit.

I began taping my dad's LPs for my Walkman in 1981. Through college and into adult life I listened to all the mozart concerti, between 3 and 12 recordings of each, some of them dozens of times.
This one, K450, K453, K466, K467, K491, and K503 I have each heard well
over 100 times.
I dropped what I was doing and listened, sometimes sitting in the car to finish a movement before taking the groceries in.
None of that time was wasted.

This is a very special piece in my opinion, it shows delicacy with child like innocence. Like a beautiful small flower popping up from the ground in spring. I remember walking in Mozart his house in Vienna and had some music on in my earpiece while walking his room, watching his views while he wrote the Vienna sonata's. Its was truly an experience I won't forget, I had the delight to share this with my sweet grandmother who showed me classic music all these years ago. I will always remember her in the sounds of Mozart. I miss her deeply, she was a mother to me and I will never forget her caring love.
@elsaesteves
Mozart's house is not in Vienna, it's in Salzburg 😑

Treasure the memory! In recent years, the Figarohaus has been renovated and improved, which means spoiled.
@Darkboy2525
@@anne-louiseluccarini4530 Ahhh the Figarohaus that was the name !! Thank you SOO MUCH !!
I really like your message, I had no idea, it seems I went just in time then ! It was truly an experience, while writing this I look to my Mozart bust on my piano that I bought from the place.
Thans again, and I agree. If its possible, we should keep as original as possible.
