Mena was thirteen years old she moved to live with her musician father. She sang and wrote lyrics as a form of therapy for her feelings and frustrations. Not all the stories in her diary became songs, but "My Lullaby" was one of them, expressing her pain from her parents' divorce. After pleading with her father to make a demo, he contacted some industry experts to record Maria's songs in the studio. Then he presented his daughter's demo to the music industry. Sony Music signed Maria Mena to their label.
In March 2002, Mena's single "My Lullaby" reached number five in the Norwegian charts. The young singer quickly gained fans and soon earned her first platinum record. 2005 saw the release of Apparently Unaffected, including singles "Miss You Love" and "Just Hold Me". A significant success in Norway, the album gained three Spellemann nominations: best female artist, best hit, and best music video.
In September 2008 Mena's fifth studio album was released, Cause and Effect.

You must have got it from your mother
You're blaming her for damage
I blame you for mine
There must be something in the water
You passed it down a generation
I've seen the years of pain I'm facing
I have to make a promise
A swear to all my future daughters
I will not abandon you
I will always tell the truth
Even if it's killing me
Even if it hurts I'll set it free
All the loving, all the, all the
All the loving, all the, all the
All the loving, all the, all the
All the loving, all the
I'm on a ledge in life, I'm leaping
The ground is softer down below
From now I'm in charge
From now I'm the parent
I swear to you I'll be transparent
I will not abandon you
I will always tell the truth
Even if it's killing me
Even if it hurts I'll set it free
I'll make sure you're well prepared
Know to only thing to fear is fear
All the loving of the world
Can't replace your mother's baby girl
All the loving, all the, all the
All the loving, all the, all the
All the loving, all the, all the
All the loving, all the
All
All all
I will not abandon you
I will always tell the truth
Even if it's killing me
Even if it hurts I'll set it free
All the loving, all the, all the
All the loving, all the, all the
All the loving, all the, all the
All the loving, all the, all the
All the loving, all the, all the
All the loving, all the, all the
All the loving, all the, all the
All the loving, all the
How can you call yourself a daughter?
You must have got it from your mother
So this has to end with me
I have to make a promise
I swear to all my future daughters
The lyrics focus on the idea of breaking generational cycles of hurt and pain. The opening lines accuse the subject of the song of inheriting damaging behavior from their mother but ends with the realization that, in fact, the problems lie with the person themselves. The line "there must be something in the water" suggests that the issue is ingrained in their family's history and it will take a conscious effort to break the cycle.
The second verse shows the singer taking control and making a promise to her future daughters that she won't cause the same pain that she's experienced. She swears to be transparent with her children and never abandon them, even if it hurts her to do so. The bridge emphasizes the importance of preparing her children for the world and acknowledging the bond between mother and child that can never be fully replaced.
Overall, the message is one of hope and empowerment. The singer recognizes the pain that has been passed down to her and makes a conscious decision to end it with herself. She takes responsibility and swears to break the cycle of hurt and pain for her future children.

Between this song and I'm Only Human, I really feel like she was pregnant and had a miscarried. :( like she wrote this before the miscarriage.
ambiguous agender
"Only Human" was written about a conversation she heard a woman having in a public restroom. Not about herself.

The producer killed this great song. Ridiculous. Just because that effect is trendy you dont have to use it. Now the song will sound outdated in a year.
Effects bind a tune to a specific time. The goal should be to create something timeless in my opinion.
