Maria Rita began to sing professionally aged 24, even though she began to sing since she was 14. Her first CD, 'Maria Rita', launched her career, with the first cut on her first album, "A Festa (The Party)", written by Milton Nascimento, a Brazilian singer-songwriter. The CD was platinum and was a hit worldwide. After that album she became an international star. Her mother's career as a renowned singer had a major influence in Maria Rita's life as a singer; She was always conscious of being the single daughter of a great singer. Despite having her mother's vocal DNA, Maria Rita developed her own jazzy vocal style, influenced by singers, like among others, Ella Fitzgerald. She won the 2004 Latin Grammy Award for Best New Artist in the General Area. Her debut album, 'Maria Rita', won the Best MPB (Popular Brasilian Music) Album award of that year. Rita is pronounced "HEE-taaa".

The lyrics of Maria Rita's song "Ciranda Do Mundo" present a commentary on the state of the world and the way it is shaped by different actors. The first two lines convey a sense of doom and helplessness, suggesting that both prophecy and the actions of vagabonds (perhaps referring to those who exploit the planet's resources) lead to the world's destruction. The third line introduces the idea that human beings themselves bear responsibility for the planet's fate, and that it may go down the drain (symbolized by the expression "pelo cano") unless they take action. Finally, the lyrics turn to the figure of the "cirandeiro," who represents the joyful and inclusive Brazilian folk dance known as "ciranda." By calling on people to "ciranda por ti" and "ciranda por mim," the song advocates for a collective effort to move forward, striving for a better future through the joy and rhythm of dancing.
Overall, the lyrics of "Ciranda Do Mundo" convey a message of both warning and hope. They acknowledge the dire state of the planet due to different actors, but also emphasize the potential for change and the power of human connection and culture to inspire positive change.
