Maria Rita began to sing professionally aged 24, even though she began to sing since she was 14. Her first CD, 'Maria Rita', launched her career, with the first cut on her first album, "A Festa (The Party)", written by Milton Nascimento, a Brazilian singer-songwriter. The CD was platinum and was a hit worldwide. After that album she became an international star. Her mother's career as a renowned singer had a major influence in Maria Rita's life as a singer; She was always conscious of being the single daughter of a great singer. Despite having her mother's vocal DNA, Maria Rita developed her own jazzy vocal style, influenced by singers, like among others, Ella Fitzgerald. She won the 2004 Latin Grammy Award for Best New Artist in the General Area. Her debut album, 'Maria Rita', won the Best MPB (Popular Brasilian Music) Album award of that year. Rita is pronounced "HEE-taaa".

No fundo eu sou otimista
In Maria Rita's song Doce De Pimenta, she talks about how every person lives their life according to their own capabilities and how she wasn't born to suffer. She believes that an angry face is equivalent to hunger and that she doesn't throw a tantrum for food. According to her, life is like a school, and death is like an entrance exam. She believes that she can get into hell without cheating, but when it comes to getting into heaven, she needs to put considerable effort. She is a person who doesn't shy away from showing affection to someone who needs it, and there is nothing that can stop her from doing so. However, if someone wrongs her, she can be as hot and fiery as a chili pepper.
Maria Rita's lyrics go on to explain that even though she is optimistic, she always imagines the worst. She is tired of this life as an artist, but the pleasure it gives her makes it all worthwhile. The song ends with a repetition of the chorus, where she reiterates that if she feels like someone hurts her, she can be hotter than a chili pepper.
The lyrics in this song resonate with many people who feel that they haven't had it easy in life, but they refuse to let their circumstances get the best of them. Maria Rita's words remind us that sometimes things may be tough, but we should remain optimistic and find pleasure even in the challenging moments of life.
