Maria Rita began to sing professionally aged 24, even though she began to sing since she was 14. Her first CD, 'Maria Rita', launched her career, with the first cut on her first album, "A Festa (The Party)", written by Milton Nascimento, a Brazilian singer-songwriter. The CD was platinum and was a hit worldwide. After that album she became an international star. Her mother's career as a renowned singer had a major influence in Maria Rita's life as a singer; She was always conscious of being the single daughter of a great singer. Despite having her mother's vocal DNA, Maria Rita developed her own jazzy vocal style, influenced by singers, like among others, Ella Fitzgerald. She won the 2004 Latin Grammy Award for Best New Artist in the General Area. Her debut album, 'Maria Rita', won the Best MPB (Popular Brasilian Music) Album award of that year. Rita is pronounced "HEE-taaa".

Muito lençol pra lavar
Fica faltando uma saia
Quando o sabãoo se acabar
Mas corra pra beira da praia
Veja a espuma brilhar
Ouça o barulho bravio
Na beira do mar
Ouça o barulho bravio
Das ondas que batem
Na beira do mar
É é! O vento soprou!
É é! A folha caiu!
É é! Cadê meu amor?
Que a noite chegou fazendo frio
É é! O vento soprou!
É é! A folha caiu!
É é! Cadê meu amor?
Que a noite chegou fazendo frio
É, Rita, tu sai da janela
Deixa esse moço passar
Quem nãoo é rica e é bela
Nãoo pode se descuidar
Mas, Rita, tu sai da janela
Que as moça desse lugar
Nem se demora donzela
Nem se destina a casar
É é! O vento soprou!
É é! A folha caiu!
É é! Cadê meu amor?
Que a noite chegou fazendo frio
É é! O vento soprou!
É é! A folha caiu!
É é! Cadê meu amor?
Que a noite chegou fazendo frio
The lyrics of "Lavadeira Do Rio" by Maria Rita tell the story of a river washerwoman who has a lot of bed linen to wash, but is missing a skirt when the soap runs out. Despite this, the song urges her to run towards the beach and to listen to the roar of the waves crashing along the shore. The chorus repeats the phrases "É é! O vento soprou!" ("The wind blew!") and "Cadê meu amor?"("Where is my love?"), highlighting the sense of longing and perhaps even desperation felt by the characters in the song. The lyrics address various issues of the time, such as the role of women, the struggles of the working class, and the search for love and companionship.
The phrase "lavadeira do rio" translates to "washerwoman of the river," which was a common occupation in Brazil in years past. The song reflects the culture and history of Brazil, as it highlights the lives of ordinary people and their struggles. The repetition of the chorus emphasizes the importance of love and the powerful emotions it can generate in people's lives. The song also conveys a sense of pride in one's identity, urging people to embrace their uniqueness and not to be swayed by societal norms.
