Maria Rita began to sing professionally aged 24, even though she began to sing since she was 14. Her first CD, 'Maria Rita', launched her career, with the first cut on her first album, "A Festa (The Party)", written by Milton Nascimento, a Brazilian singer-songwriter. The CD was platinum and was a hit worldwide. After that album she became an international star. Her mother's career as a renowned singer had a major influence in Maria Rita's life as a singer; She was always conscious of being the single daughter of a great singer. Despite having her mother's vocal DNA, Maria Rita developed her own jazzy vocal style, influenced by singers, like among others, Ella Fitzgerald. She won the 2004 Latin Grammy Award for Best New Artist in the General Area. Her debut album, 'Maria Rita', won the Best MPB (Popular Brasilian Music) Album award of that year. Rita is pronounced "HEE-taaa".

Maria Rita Lyrics

O meu peite percebeu
Que o mar uma gota
Comparado ao pranto meu
Certo
Quando o nosso amor esperto
Logo o sol se desespera
E se esconde la na serra
O que meu nao se divide
Nem tao pouco se admite
Quem do nosso amor duvide
At a lua
Se arrisca no palpite
Que o nosso amor existe
Forte ou fraco
Alegre ou triste
The lyrics to Maria Rita's song Madalena express an intense and consuming love that the singer feels for the titular character. The opening lines compare the vastness of the sea to the singer's tears, emphasizing the depth of their emotions. The singer believes that their love is so overpowering that even the sun hides behind the mountains when it is awakened. In the next stanza, the singer declares that their love cannot be separated or denied by anyone, not even the moon, which may try to guess at the strength of their connection. The final line leaves the listener unsure if the love is currently joyful or melancholy, but it is clear it exists regardless of the emotional state.
Overall, the lyrics paint a picture of a love that is all-consuming and overpowering. Despite the potential pain that may come with this intense emotion, the singer seems to embrace it fully and wants to share its intensity with the object of their affection.
