Maria Rita began to sing professionally aged 24, even though she began to sing since she was 14. Her first CD, 'Maria Rita', launched her career, with the first cut on her first album, "A Festa (The Party)", written by Milton Nascimento, a Brazilian singer-songwriter. The CD was platinum and was a hit worldwide. After that album she became an international star. Her mother's career as a renowned singer had a major influence in Maria Rita's life as a singer; She was always conscious of being the single daughter of a great singer. Despite having her mother's vocal DNA, Maria Rita developed her own jazzy vocal style, influenced by singers, like among others, Ella Fitzgerald. She won the 2004 Latin Grammy Award for Best New Artist in the General Area. Her debut album, 'Maria Rita', won the Best MPB (Popular Brasilian Music) Album award of that year. Rita is pronounced "HEE-taaa".
Não Vale A Pena
Maria Rita Lyrics

Tudo aquilo, nada disso
Sobrou meu velho vício de sonhar
Pular de precipício em precipício
Ossos do ofício
Pagar pra ver o invisível
E depois enxergar
Mas você não vale a pena
Não vale uma fisgada dessa dor
Não cabe como rima de um poema
De tão pequeno
Mas vai e vem e envenena
E me condena ao rancor
De repente, cai o nível
E eu me sinto uma imbecil
Repetindo, repetindo, repetindo
Como num disco riscado
O velho texto batido
Dos amantes mal-amados
Dos amores mal-vividos
E o terror de ser deixada
Cutucando, relembrando, reabrindo
A mesma velha ferida
E é pra não ter recaída
Que não me deixo esquecer
Que é uma pena
Mas você não vale a pena
The lyrics in "Não Vale a Pena" by Maria Rita reflect the feelings of a woman who is stuck in a cycle of unrequited love. The first verse talks about how everything has become difficult for her, and she is left with only her old addiction of dreaming and jumping from one emotional cliff to another. She calls it "ossos do ofício," or the nature of her job, to pay to see the invisible and then gain the insight to move forward.
The chorus emphasizes the singer's realization that the person she is in love with is not worth the pain and heartache. The words "Não vale a pena" mean "not worth it" in English. She knows that the person is not even significant enough to be the subject of a lousy poem, and every time she remembers, she feels resentful and angry. She recognizes that she is stuck in a vicious cycle, and she does not want to fall into the trap again.
The second verse describes how the singer feels like an imbecile, repeating the same old script of a poorly loved lover who is scared of being left behind. She recalls the pain of being rejected, and how it cut deep like an old wound that never healed. However, she refuses to let herself fall back into the same cycle and keeps reminding herself that the person is not worth it.
Overall, the song conveys the message that it is essential to recognize our worth and not let anyone make us feel like we are not enough. It's crucial to break free from toxic relationships and not repeat the same mistakes.
